Kumaraguru College of Technology (KCT), Coimbatore is a private Engineering College started in 1984 under the auspices of Ramanandha Adigalar Foundation, a charitable educational trust of Sakthi Group. About 10 km from Central Bus Stand at Gandhipuram and 2 km off Sathy Road (national highway NH-209 leading to Mysore), the well-developed college campus spreads over a sprawling 150 acres of land in the IT Corridor of Coimbatore. Under the able guidance and patronage of Arutselvar Dr. N. Mahalingam and with the able administration of Dr.B.K.Krishnaraj Vanavarayar, Chairman, Sri. M.Balasubramaniam, Correspondent and Sri. Shankar Vanavarayar, Joint Correspondent, the college has developed excellent facilities and resources such as spacious classrooms, seminar halls, well-equipped laboratories, workshops, well-stocked libraries, dedicated high speed internet connectivity (broadband) and well-qualified faculty.

Contents

The infrastructure includes a tech park, the space of which is leased out to renowned technology companies. The tech park also houses a DST funded technology incubator called CIBI (Coimbatore Innovation and Business Incubator) that nurtures aspiring start-ups.

Apart from excellence in academics, students of the college also excel in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities and have represented and won several national and international level competitions.

Human Excellence Centre

The Centre for Human Excellence was started in KCT with a mission to impart knowledge about: Indian Culture, Ethics, Values and Spiritual Principles in a modern idiom to the youth by employing a scientific and rational approach. It helps the youth to unfold their hidden potentialities and achieve excellence in every field of life. In short, it is an effective human resource development program which can lead to total human fulfilment.

Mahatma Gandhi Study Centre

Mahatma Gandhi Study Centre at KCT houses a photo gallery and books written on Mahatma Gandhi with an objective of inculcating Gandhian thoughts in younger minds. This is also used as a seminar hall to carry out lectures on Gandhian principles and other socially benefiting activities. Under a special scheme some of the qualified students are chosen to receive the Mahatma Gandhi Scholarship of Rs. 10,000. Each year one among the six students benefits by this scheme. The Gandhian Youth Movement, a part of this centre, along with other students actively participate in Social Reformation Activities and in creating awareness for Anti-alcoholism, eye- donation, organ donation, etc..

Swami Vivekananda Study Centre

Swami Vivekananda Study Centre at KCT, focuses on ‘Man Making Education’, as per the thoughts of the Co - Chairman, Dr.B.K.Krishnaraj Vanavarayar (2). The centre housing a photo gallery and a library depicting the life and message of Swami Vivekananda is aimed at making the students understand the significant of spirituality as an integral part of human resource development by advocating the teachings of Swami Vivekananda. This centre will be an opportunity for youth to spend their leisure time in getting to know about the rich cultural heritage of the country.

ISO 9001:2008 certification further confirms the institution's commitment to educational quality. 9 of the 15 academic departments have been recognized as research centres permitting research leading to Ph.D. degree by Anna University. KCT being an Autonomous college, follows the Choice Based Credit System and Outcome Based Education (OBE), the main objective being that at the end of the graduation, the student should have achieved his/her goal.

    KCT B School

    KCT Business School was born out of a rich legacy, strong vision and great commitment. The magnificent campus and the edifice, enormous reputation, robust academics and more are all the manifestation of the hard work of the Founding Fathers and the commitment of the faculty and staff.

    KCT BS is one of the most distinguished institutions of higher education in the state, continually striving to fulfil the aspirations of its stakeholders. It has been consistently ranked very high in the Business School surveys and is a sought after Institution by the prospective students and recruiters.

    Ranking

    KCT was ranked 53rd among ‘Top 100 Engineering Institutes for Research and Teaching’ and 35th in ‘Teaching, learning and resouces’ in India by National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in 2016 (3). NIRF also ranked KCT 1st in Teaching, Learning and Resources (TLR), 5th rank in Outreach and Inclusivity (OI), 6th rank in Publication, Research and Consultancy (PRC), among private Unaided Autonomous Engineering colleges in India (3). KCT has always been one of the top most colleges preferred by students during the Tamil Nadu Engineering Admission (TNEA) counselling. And KCT is the 9th college to get its seats filled in the Anna University counselling (4). Anna University ranked KCT as 4th based on the Course Speciality and Branches (5).

    Research

    Research has always been greatly appreciated in KCT for its students and as well as for faculty. 9 of the 15 academic departments have been recognized as research centres permitting research leading to Ph.D. degree by Anna University.   • A vital number of KCTians have published and got international recognition for their research papers. Several patents have been filed by each and every department in every year both by the Faculty and the students. Also, KCT has a special wing called Ré, where people work together to impart and enhance research culture in KCT (6).

    KCT TIFAC Core

    TIFAC Core is a joint venture involving the participation of an educational institution (Kumaraguru College of Technology, Coimbatore) and The Government of India. Technology, Information, Forecasting and Assessment Council (TIFAC), is the first centre dedicated to the textile / apparel sector in India. While the institution provides the site and some initial requirements, the government brings in resources adequate enough to overcome the sub-criticality and the user organizations bring in resources as well as relevance to the efforts. This CORE facilitates the Textile and Fashion Technology students for shaping their interest and skills in research and knowledge. The same way there are various lab and research facilities available for the each Engineering Domain.

    CEAD

    Kumaraguru College of Technology established this Centre of Excellence in Advanced Design with a focus on innovation & research. This centre is established to bring "Science to Engineering" culture using "High Performance Computing" and address the technological needs for the country through quality education and training (7). This will enables students to face design challenges by offering an excellent design learning experience through project based learning.

    Faculty

    KCT has about 400 teaching and 395 non-teaching staffs. Dynamic faculty make the institution prouder and they are increasing day by day. Most of the faculty have their Doctorates and have strong qualifications from reputed universities such as: IIT, IIST, etc. Also, to groom faculty in their domain knowledge and broaden their teaching motives, Faculty Development Programmes (FDP), faculty/student exchange Programmes co-sponsored by reputable national and international universities are undertaken as well.

    Infrastructure and Facilities

    KCT, the sprawling 150 acre campus in the urban IT field of Coimbatore, is surely a landmark . The campus of 15 Lakh sq.ft area has the following facilities.

    Academic blocks

    Five different academic blocks host the five major departments including the especially dedicated block of Science and Humanities Department for First Year students. The administrative building, "Dr.Mahalingam Vigyan Bhavan" is an architectural beauty and a landmark in Coimbatore. Dr.Mahalingam Vigyan Bhavan is the symbolic icon of the institution.It houses the admin block,library,seminar hall complex(central wing),department of Computer Application,KCT Business School(left wing),Iqube,Research cell and some other offices(right wing).

    Library

    There is a centralised library called Mahatma Gandhi Central Library housed in the first floor of the Dr. Mahalingam Vigyan Bhavan in an area of 16945 sq.ft. Central library has a collection of 104475 volumes and 66559 titles included. The central library is also subscribed to 178 Print Journals, 48 magazines and 9122 Online International Journals for scholarly communication. The fully computerized central library is well equipped with modern facilities and resources in the form of books, printed and electronic journals, on-line databases, audio video cassettes, project reports etc. Open Access System and OPAC is being followed to access the books and journals (8). Operating between 8 AM to 11 PM normally, students and faculty can lend the books for a period of 15 days and can renew it for another 15 days continuously. Library also has other modern facilities such as: EBSCO Business Source Elite Database, Reprography and EDUSAT, which is a satellite telecast from Anna University, Chennai.

    Hostels

    KCT students Hostel is an integral part of the college campus. It has two distinct sections for boys and girls students. The gents’ hostel comprises four blocks with total of 445 rooms with a capacity to accommodate 1335 students. The Ladies hostel has a total of 329 rooms in its three blocks with a capacity to accommodate 987 students.

    Vallalar Maiyam

    Vallalar Maiyam - the new and state of art Student Facilities Center for Boys is built in an area of 65,000 sq.ft with two floors of Dining for boys with a capacity of 1400 students to eat at one time. The modern kitchen can cook over 14,000 meals a day. The 2nd floor has recreation facilities like TV Halls, Indoor games, Reading rooms and commuting facilities. And the 3rd floor has dormitories to house students on special occasions and can house about 200 students. Vallalar Maiyam is dedicated to Sri Ramalinga Adigalar also known as Vallalar. Mr. Venkaiah Naidu inaugurated this newly built facility centre on April 3, 2016. (9)

    Sharada Maiyam

    Sharada Maiyam is a recently built women students’ facility centre. This facility centre was built in the memory of Sri Sharada Devi, the spiritual consort of Sri Ramakrishna Mutt. Spread over 50,000 sq.ft this centre will house facilities for indoor games, television, computer stations, a reading room, recreation, fitness, accommodation, dining facility for 1,000 students and state-of-the-art kitchen with a cooking capacity of 4,000 meals a day. This centre was inaugurated by the Union Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar on November 5, 2016 (10).

    Gnanavinayakar Temple

    The campus temple at the entrance, besides being a place of worship has also a well-stocked library of spiritual, moral books & periodicals. Daily poojas are performed. All festivals and other important functions are celebrated with participation of students & staff.

    Aruljothi Dhyana Mandapam

    An octagonal shaped air-conditioned Dhyana Mandapam is located opposite to the Gnanavinayagar Temple. Staff, students and guests can make use of this facility for finding peace and meditating.

    Aruljothi Medical Center

    Aruljothi Medical Center in the campus is an 8- bedded hospital with a doctor and nursing assistants. Students and staff requiring medical consulting or a medical emergency can make use of this facility by registering their ID details.

    Bank With Atm Facilities

    Karur Vysya Bank, with ATM facility, functions in the campus with all routine banking transactions. The bank is located near the western gate. Axis Bank ATM functions inside the campus which is located near Aruljothi Medical Center.

    Auditorium

    The air-conditioned Ramalinga Adigalar Auditorium has a capacity of 1800 seating and an excellent stage to be used for all common functions / events. The auditorium is designed in such a way that it is visually and phonetically accessible to each and every audience. Most of the functions starting from college cultural programs such as Yugam to Graduation ceremony usually take place in this auditorium.

    Seminar Halls

    There are four A/C seminar halls, each with 250 capacity located at Dr. Mahalingam Vigyan Bhavan. They are named after: Dr.Vikram Sarabhai, Sir C V Raman, Sir M. Visvesvaraya, Swami Vivekananda. These halls are regularly used to conduct International and National level conferences and seminars. In addition to these seminar halls, seminar halls with capacity of 120 are located in various academic blocks.

    KORE

    In order to serve the students with meals and snacks, KORE – the cafeteria is established at two different places at KCT called East Kore and West Kore. Other than KORE, the other snack centres are:

    KRAFT

    There are well equipped international standard Gyms separately for men / women students and staff in an area of 2400 sq.ft with the latest equipment in the well laid out in in-door Gym units. KRAFT is the newly built gym with ultra-modern equipments and facilities in order to encourage the Weight lifters, Body builders and Fitness seekers. Mr. Vignesh of KCT Business School, who is a regular member of KRAFT, has won the junior Mr.India title held at KCT on December 3, 2016.

    About founder -- Dr. N. Mahalingam

    Dr. N. Mahalingam, fondly known as Arutselvar Ayya, was the Chairman of Sakthi Group of companies, educationalist, notable philanthropist and a prominent, influential person of Tamil Nadu. For his outstanding contributions to society and was awarded the Padma Bhushan from the President of India in 2007. Pollachi born, Mahalingam, is an ardent follower of the teachings of spiritual people such as Sri Swami Satchidananda, the Vethathiri Maharishi and Vallalar.

    Office of Student Affairs

    There is a delegated group of faculty and students forming the office of Student Affairs. The mission of the Office of Student Affairs is based on the commitment to student success, in and out of the classroom, emphasizing on lifelong learning by focusing academic and personal well-being and Extra-curricular activities. Students are encouraged visit or call Student affairs office if any need of help or for the concerns related to Homesickness, Stress management, Mental health and Wellness, Financial problems or any kind of personal crisis or Substance use/abuse related concerns too.

    Training and Placement Cell

    KCT has a training and placement cell catering to the needs of our students and potential employers. The cell is headed by a Training and placement officer and faculty and student coordinators from various departments assist the Training and placement officer. The office is also assisted by student coordinators, who lead a team of placement representatives from various courses of studies. The placement cell organizes career guidance programs for the students. The cell arranges training programs such as facing interviews, group discussions, etc. The cell also invites HR managers from different industries to conduct training programs for the students. The placement cell has launched the language learning Center (llC) to teach Hindi and foreign languages such as German, French, Japanese, etc. to the students.

    iQube

    iQube is a Technology Incubation Centre at KCT is specially meant for students to improve and excel their technical experience. It has an R & D lab where one can try experimenting their idea with the available resources in the lab. For outstanding Ideas and Projects, they will be funded to complete a prototype model. It further aims at mentoring and training the interested ones with the necessary and updated technology. (11)

    Garage

    The Garage is a fabrication lab to be said in short. It is also the place where students gather to discuss about their existing projects. It was established with a view to help the students with their projects for taking part in a competition or for any research activities, etc. It is also the place where the Supra, Baja and Efficycle teams fabricate their vehicles for the SAE events. The Garage is accessible to all the departments and is open to all (12).

    FORGE

    FORGE is an Initiative by CIBI, A Sakthi Group Company in Coimbatore CIBI – Coimbatore Innovation and Business Incubator, an incubator company promoted by The Sakthi Group, and hosted by Kumaraguru College of Technology (KCT), is catalysed and supported by NSTEDB Division, Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India. CIBI shall build competencies & capabilities through Programmes, partners and people in the strategic areas of Innovation Labs, Business Accelerators and Sector Incubators. The primary goal of the business acceleration Programme called FORGE.FAST is to help generate more numbers of ‘Investable Startups’ that are attractive for early stage (seed capital) investments. To achieve this goal FORGE. FAST offers intensive business mentoring, co-working, tech infra & resources, market access, and company services (13)

    23 acres of well developed play fields for the following major outdoor games & sports is provided: Football, Hockey, Cricket, Basketball, Volley Ball, Ball badminton, Kabaddi, Tennis, Handball, Kho-Kho, Throw ball and out-door Gymnastic. There is an indoor sports centre called, Dr. Arumugam Sports Centre, which hosts indoor sports like: Badminton, Volleyball, Carom, Through Ball, etc. Notable KCTians have won the International and national level fame in the sports. Each and every year there will be at least a few persons from KCT will participate in international games like, Common Wealth, etc. With coachers available separately for both men and women, students from KCT thrive at the state level competitions.

    Yugam

    Yugam is one of the South India's largest Inter College Techno Cultural Fest of Kumaraguru College of Technology. Inter College competitions, sessions, exhibitions, pro – shows and much more will be part of the Yugam. Yugam normally happens in the month of February every year. The objective of Yugam is to showcase the dynamism of young Indians today and to inspire them to aspire for a greater India.

    Yugam paves the way for orators, writers, dancers and singers. Normally, about 45 workshops will be conducted which also includes Audi and BOSCH showcasing their automotive legacies. In Yugam, 2015, KCT conducted workshops in IIT Madras and Anna University this year as part of its outreach. Social campaigns were also conducted to reach out to the physically challenged through which over 500 people got impacted. Yugam ’15 was said to be a snowballing game changer for the Inter-college fest of South India (14)

    International Affairs

    KCT has tie-ups and have signed MoUs regarding the Student and Faculty Exchange program, technical education, panel discussions, etc. with some of the leading universities around the world such as: Engineering of RWTH Aachen University, Germany, Technical University of Liberec, Czech Republic, Hochschule Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences, Germany, University of Loughborough, UK, Tel Aviv University International, University of LEEDS, UK, etc. These programs have benefitted students and Faculty in large manner that several of the students used this opportunity to present their papers and returned with international fame.

    For the last 3 decades, KCT has been heralding a decisive and distinct impact on society. This has been achieved through Technical and Value based education that has been imparted to over 17,000 dynamic engineers over the years. Global Annual Alumni meet is an Extravaganza is blend of bonding, networking, learning and most of all an opportunity for KCT Alumni to come back to their second home. Global Alumni meet last time happened at San Francisco in USA. Special Alumni meetings are arranged for the passed out students in KCT and in other important cities of South India.
