Kristoffer Diaz is an American playwright who lives in Brooklyn, New York.

He received his Bachelor of Arts from New York University's Albert Gallatin School of Individualized Study, a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) from NYU's Department of Dramatic Writing, and an MFA from Brooklyn College’s Performing Arts Management program.

Career and awards

Diaz used to be a member of the Ars Nova Play Group. He produces commissioned works for the Goodman Theater and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. He has also worked as an artist-in-residence for Teatro Vista and was a recipient of the Jerome Fellowship.

As of 2017, Diaz is a playwright-in-residence for Temple University in Philadelphia.

Plays

His play The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity was nominated for the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It also won 2011 New York Times Outstanding Playwright award, Lucille Lortel Award, Obie Award, Drama Desk nomination, and Jeff Award for Best Production and Best New Work.

Welcome to Arroyo's is a piece that locates of Latinas and Latinos in the role of hip-hop culture. It premiered at the American Theater Company in Chicago on April 15, 2010, and was directed by Jamie Castañeda Welcome to Arroyo's was featured in the Hi-Arts hip-hop theatre festival. This play tells the story of a Puerto Rican family living on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. The teenage daughter, Molly, commits herself to the graffiti elements of hip-hop culture, which causes a conflict in values between her and her brother. The play is narrated by a DJ and MC chorus, who incorporate elements hip-hop and [spoken word poetry] to comment on the action.
