Lilley was born in New York City to American diplomat John Lilley and Norwegian mother Ellen Lilley Christensen. Her family moved to Colombia when she was three years old; Lilley identifies herself with Colombian culture. She studied biology at the Pontifical Xavierian University before becoming an actress. She speaks both Spanish, and English with a New York accent fluently. She has two daughters: Maegan (b. 5 January 1989) and Rakel Suárez (b. 4 December 1993).
