Krishnath College School

Krishnath College School, located in Berhampore, is one of the oldest school in Bengal as well as in India. Originally held in the same building with Krishnath College, it was moved into separate buildings in 1908.

Early History
• Krishnath College was established on 1 November 1853 AD in the building known as the Manindra Hostel in pursuance of Govt. education policy.
• The school had no separate existence. It was part and parcel of the College
• Regular Classes were started from 21 November 1853
• In 1855, the School was shifted to Mr. Verdon Monasagon’s two storyed house.
• In 1857, the School was again shifted to Banjetia House of Maharani Swarnamoyee.
• In 1859, Krishnath College Building was completed and the school was shifted in the eastern block of the college building from the center room up to the carriage-stand verandah.
• On 14 May 1887, Maharani Swarnamoyee undertook the administrative and financial control of the college as well as the school.

Journey with a New Name
• In 1902, the name of the school was changed to Krishnath College school
• In 1908, the main school was split up into 3 parts-
i) The first 4 classes were housed in the building known as Hari Babu’s Balakhana in front of New Market
ii) Some Classes were held in the building known as Kuthibari opposite to Rai Bahadur Baikuntha Sen’s house
iii) Some classes were held in the premises part of which is now occupied by the Deaf and Dumb School

Foundation of New Building
• On 9 August 1909,the foundation stone was laid by Hon’ble Sir Edward Norman Baker,the Lieutenant-Governor of Bengal
• The school was shifted to its present imposing building, built at a cost of Rs. 1,35000/- donated by Maharaja Sir Manindra Chandra Nandy, K.I.C.E. of Cossimbazar
• In August 1911, the school was formally opened by Lord Fraser William Duke, the Officiating Governor of Bangal.
• This magnificent two storeyed building- a wonderful blending of semi Gothic and Corinthian architecture – boasts a "Hall" unique of its kind having no pillar inside and measuring 115’10" X 40’5" X 25’5"

Activities
• The boy Scout movement was introduced in this school in 1921.The Scout Troop of this school rendered admirable service in Monghyr after the devastations brought about by the Behar earthquake
• In 1949-50, the school took Grant in Aid on the deficit basis.
• A Junior Division,62nd Troop, of the NCC was started in the school on 31 January 1952.
• The system of midday tiffin, as outlined by Board of Secondary Education has been introduced in Class V to VI for one year as an experimental measure.
• The school took active role for the propagation of our National Language.

• The School has sent four of her children to serve the cause of national defence.
• The School became a sponsored school from 19 January 1989.
