Kowdoor Nayarbettu

The house of Kowdoor Nayarbettu is a medieval Tulu Bunt family in the Dakshina Kannada region of Karnataka, India. Founded in the later half of the 14th century, it is one of the oldest Bunt families in the South Canara region. It is located in Kowdoor village, Karkala taluk in Udupi district.

Location

Kowdoor Nayarbettu is located in Kowdoor village in Karkala taluk, Udupi district. According to the family records, the areas in and around Kowdoor village were given as a family property share in lieu of the marriage of a young couple from the Korangrapady and Badagabettu families who went on to become the first members of the family and the first inhabitants of the village of Kowdoor in the newly-formed house.

History

From the 15th century until Indian independence, the Kowdoor Nayarbettu family was the highest seat of authority in Kowdoor village and also in the other small villages surrounding it, giving them influence over an area of approximately 1,000 acres (400 ha).
