Klahowya Secondary School (or KSS) is a secondary school located in Silverdale, Washington and is in the Central Kitsap School District. Its award-winning programs include marching band (Marching Eagles), the cross country team, the baseball team, and the wrestling team. Klahowya Secondary School was constructed in 1996-1997 as a 132,000 square foot facility with 20 classrooms for grades 6-12. Klahowya is home to an award-winning Knowledge Bowl team and a hard-working Newspaper Club in addition to many other clubs and activities. The Klahowya JV History Bowl team won the State and Pacific Northwest championships in 2016. Also in 2016, Klahowya expanded to accept 6th graders, changed from a quarter to a semester system, and controversially was forced by the district to disallow academic clubs during Academy, their academic study period. This last change decreased club participation dramatically by forcing students who already had after- or before-school commitments or were not in a particular lunch to drop out of such organizations as Philosophy Club, Newspaper Club, and High School Honor Society.

Etymology

"Klahowya", also spelled as "Klahowyum", is Chinook Jargon. It is pronounced "Kluh-HOW-yuh", as in "Klahowya doin'?" It is commonly understood as a greeting or salutation; thus, it is a redundancy when students say "Welcome to Klahowya". However, "Klahowyum" can also mean "please help me" or "I'm miserable" in the proper context; for a secondary school, said application is particularly relevant during Finals or Midterms.
