Background
Kim Kurniawan was born in Mühlacker, Germany, to a German mother Uschi and a Chinese Indonesian father, Petrus Kurniawan. His grandfather from his father's side, Kwee Hong Sing, was also a national team footballer who played for Persija Jakarta and also the Indonesian national football team in the 1950s. Born as a German national, Kim decided to obtain an Indonesian passport after Football Association of Indonesia offered him to play for the national team. He came to Indonesia in early 2010 with other Indonesian descent footballers Irfan Bachdim and Alessandro Trabucco. They were invited by Football Association of Indonesia to play in two charity games. On December 2010, he officially holds an Indonesian passport and became the second naturalized football player after Cristian Gonzáles, who had done it earlier in November 2010.

On 10 September 2014 he extended his contract until 2016.
International career
Kim won his first cap for Indonesia in a friendly match against Myanmar on 30 March 2015, where he played as a substitute in a win 2-1.
