Khrabrovo Airport (Russian Аэропорт Храброво) (IATA: KGD, ICAO: UMKK) is the airport of Kaliningrad, located 24 kilometers (15 mi) north of the city near the village of Khrabrovo. While it mostly serves scheduled domestic destinations, part of it is still a military base of the Russian Air Force.

History

  • 1922 - Joint Russian-German joint venture Deruluft starts flights on first scheduled international route, from Königsberg (Devau airport) - Moscow
  • 1945 - Airport is transferred to Civil Air Fleet of USSR
  • 1961 - Joint Air Squadron formed at the basis of airport and airline
  • 1977 - Operations of Tupolev-134 begin
  • 1979 - Passenger terminal is built in Khrabrovo
  • 1988 - Tupolev-154s begin operations to Kaliningrad
  • 1992 - Enterprise separates from Vnukovo Production association and becomes independent entity
  • 1993 - First scheduled international flights begin. Two Tupolev-154s are purchased
  • 1997 - Air enterprise is renamed “Kaliningrad Avia”
  • 2001 - Air enterprise is in receivership
  • 2002 - Change of ownership structure. Transformation into Joint Stock Company
  • 2004 – Beginning of reconstruction of runway, apron, navigation equipment
  • 2005 – Air enterprise renamed “KD Avia”
  • 2007 - opening of the new terminal
  • 2009 - "KD Avia" airlines cease operations
