Khanewal District (Urdu: ضِلع خانیوال‎) is a district of the Punjab province of Pakistan. Its capital is Khanewal the host city to the second-largest railway station in the country. According to the 1998 census of Pakistan, the district had a population of 2,068,490, of which 17.42% were urban. Khanewal is located at 30°18'0N 71°55'0E with an altitude of 128 metres. It is surrounded by five districts, Multan, Jhang, Sahiwal, Vehari, Toba Tek Singh.Khanewal distric comprises fertile land for the growth of wheat, sugar-cane, cotton.

The district of Khanewal is spread over an area of 4,349 square kilometres (1,679 sq mi) and comprises 4 tehsils:

  • History

    The district of Khanewal was created in 1985 by taking two tehsils from Multan District: Kabirwala and Mian Channu.

    Geography

    Its boundaries meet the districts of Jhang and Toba Tek Singh in the north, Sahiwal in the east, Vehari in south and with Multan in the west. Underground water resources are generally adequate throughout the district. The subsoil water is sweet and suitable for industrial purposes. There is no mentionable nullah available in the district. However, effluent of industry can be disposed of in the rivers, namely Chenab and Ravi, after pretreatment, with permission from the Irrigation and Power Department, Government of the Punjab.

    The climate of the District is hot and dry. The summer Season starts in April and continues till October. May, June and July are the hottest months.

    There are 26 telephone exchanges operating in the district (ranging in capacity from 200 lines to 7200 lines). Cellular phone services are also available. The area has 20 national bank branches, 24 post offices, 7 textile mills, 1 sugar mill, 71 cotton gin factories, 17 police stations on 1,058,641 acres (4,284 km2).

    Demography

    The population of Khanewal District was 2,068,000 in the 1998 Census. In the 2005 Economic Survey the population was reported at 2,376,000 with a growth rate of 2.4%. In 2015 the population of Khaewal District was estimated to be 2,941,000.

    According to the census of 1998, Punjabi is the most widely spoken first language of the district, accounting for 81% of the population. Urdu was the native language of 7.8%, Saraiki – of 5.8% and Pashto – of 1.1%.

    Sports

    Khanewal has rich culture in sports and games. The most common sports are Kabaddi, Cricket, Football. Many cricketer have played first-class and international cricket. Shabbir Ahmed, Rao Iftikhar Anjum and Masood Anwar are the remarkable cricketers who played international cricket representing Pakistan Cricket Team.Football is also remarkably growing sports in Khanewal.

    FIFA Football Academy Khanewal

    The development of FIFA Football academy in progress in Khanewal. It is the first FIFA-funded facility in Punjab. After completion of this project, Khanewal would be able to host national as well as international football matches.

    Industry

    Besides textile mills, sugar mills, vegetable oil mills, milk processing unit, etc. A number of engineering goods industries are manufacturing a variety of agricultural implements. In view of existing engineering base, there exist good prospects for Foundry, Die-Casting, Wrenches/Spanners/Hand Tools, Cast Iron Pipes, Welding Electrodes, Aluminum utensils, Water-Pumps, etc. manufacturing units. A paper-Cone Manufacturing Unit and Tins-Making Unit may also be established to meet the requirements of textile mills and vegetable oil manufacturing units.

    Demand Based Industry

    Considering the general requirements of the district, there seems to be good potential for biscuits, vermicelli’s, packing boxes, PVC shoes, laundry soap, steel doors / windows, etc. The agrarian nature of the district also reflects good prospects for insecticides/pesticides manufacturing unit.
