History
Kenya and Venezuela established diplomatic relations in 1970.
Kenya, although largely cooperative with the West, has always maintained a non-allied stance in its foreign policy.
Development cooperation
Both countries have signed agreements in the political, technical, cultural and energy sectors.
There are approximately 200 African students studying in Venezuela, which includes Kenyan nationals. Both countries are also keen to reactivate the "Sponsor a School in Africa" programme.
2012 Venezuelan embassy incident
In 2012, the Acting Venezuelan ambassador to Kenya, Olga Fonseca was murdered. The First Secretary of the embassy, Dwight Sagaray was charged with the murder. It was thought that the two had been fighting over leadership of the embassy.
During the court proceedings it was discovered that drugs, among other things, were being smuggled to Kenya through the Venezuelan embassy.
As of 2014, the murder remains unsolved.
