Pastor Ken Scrubbs - National Day of Prayer


Ken Scrubbs is a pastor, leader, humanitarian, and educational activist. He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana and graduated from Grambling State University in Grambling, Louisiana. He is known for his model projects in service delivery.

Ken has served as a Panelist for the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiative Conference, addressing Florida’s High Risk Youth. He also Served as Chairman of The State of Florida Drop-Out Prevention Task Force after being appointed by Department of Education Commissioner John Wynn. He was appointed by Governor Charlie Crist as Board Member to New Florida Disaster Relief Recovery Fund, and as a Member of the One Church One Child Board.

Ken has also partnered with the School System to provide faith-based mentors to nearly 700 at-risk elementary, middle and high school students. Of these, 150 come to The Genesis Center campus; while 550 students are assisted on school campuses. The youths from troubled neighborhoods near the campus also receive academic support which includes math, reading, history and science, assistance in test-taking and technology. The Genesis Center employs social development skills which include an emphasis on character, commitment, conflict resolution and anger management.

Biography

He has received many national, State and community recognitions and meritorious awards. He was awarded the United States Attorney General Volunteer Award In Washington D.C. as the Nation’s Volunteer of the year for his work in Federal Prisons. He received Special Congressional Recognition by United States Senator Bill Nelson for service in the community. He received the Distinguished Service Award from the Department of Criminal Justice. He was selected by the Florida Monthly Magazine as One of Twenty-two most Intriguing Floridians who excels in service to others. He is also featured in the author of Purpose Driven Life, Rick Warren’s Ministry Toolbox for his extraordinary work in prisons.

Ken is the Cultural Community Relations Pastor of First Baptist Church in Leesburg, Florida. Ken is a ministry coordinator in Leesburg. He is also the director of The Micah Project (Mentoring Children), 21st Century Learning Initiative (after school tutoring) and the Lake County Neighborhood Accountability Board and Peer Mediation Programs through the Department of Juvenile Justice. He conducts weekly Purpose Driven Life classes at Coleman Federal Prison, which is the largest Federal Prison in the United States. Ken is also the head administrator/visionary of The Genesis Center, which seeks to meet the needs of the community through education and mentoring.

Ken has been married to Linda for 36 years, and he is the father of three college graduates Cymonda, April and James.

Scrubbs founded the Genesis Center. The Genesis Center began as an after-school mentoring program, but has grown to be much more. The Genesis Center serves the under-privileged in the community through mentoring, and tutoring. The Genesis Center offers programs for the entire community regardless of age. From the tutoring and after-school program catered for elementary kids, all the way up to GED classes and scholarships for those seeking to enter college from the community.
