Ken Drake (b. UK, 1970) is an Australian photographer specializing in creating animal portraits. Drake photographs about 1300 animals each year for clients and for various charities in Australia. Drake operates a portrait photography business, Zoo Studio, in Brisbane. He is the author of the book Tail Tales and major photographic contributor in Oscars Law’s 2012 book I Want Oscar Law because. Drake has won over 65 professional photography awards since 2008.

Education and Work

Drake worked in the field of information technology at British Telecom and Micromuse in London UK. In 2006 he emigrated to Perth, Western Australia where he founded Zoo Studio. Relocating to Brisbane, Queensland in 2009, Drake's work has been featured in many magazines, books, on the radio, and on national TV. Drake has no formal education in photography. He was made an Associate of the Australian Institute of Professional Photography in 2011.

Many of Drake's photographs were Finalist images in Creative Asia 2010 and 2012. One of Drake's photographs won the International Faces competition held by Photographic District News in 2011 and he entered many Finalist images in the International Loupe Awards 2011, 2012 and 2013

In 2012 Drake's photograph entitled "Dale - abused Shar Pei" won first prize for animal photography at the International Photography Awards as well as a Silver Medal at the Australian Professional Photography Awards and a Silver Medal at the International Aperture Awards.

In 2013 he won a gold medal at the Australian Photography Awards.

In 2014 Drake was in the news after he created a series of photos of an abandoned baby koala and auctioned them to raise money for the animal's care. Also in 2014 he was awarded the Grand Prize at the Wedding and Portrait Photographers International Awards in Los Angeles.

Book - Tail Tales

Drake’s first book, Tail Tales, is a photographic exploration of pets lives in Australia in 2013. It contains portraits of some of Australia’s most loved pets, all photographed in a studio setting. The book was designed as a fundraiser for RSPCA Queensland, and has so far raised over $23,000 for the RSPCA. The subjects of the book include many RSPCA rescued animals, as well other pets.
