Keith A. Kelly is a judge of the Utah Third District Court, in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA . Kelly was appointed to the bench by Utah Governor Gary Herbert in 2009.

Biography

Kelly was born on August 4, 1958 in Blackford, Idaho, and attended Del Mar High School in San Jose, California where he was involved on the speech and debate team.

Kelly attended college at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. He received a bachelor’s degree in economics in 1981, graduating summa cum laude. In 1982 he graduated with his master’s degree, also in economics. He later received a Jurist Doctorate’s degree from Stanford Law in 1985.

Prior to his judicial appointment, Kelly served as a clerk to Monroe G. McKay, in Utah’s Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals for one year. Following his clerkship, he began his career as a civil litigator, with the Salt Lake City law firm, Ray Quinney and Nebeker.

Kelly's law practice on litigation matters involving, corporate, commercial, intellectual property and real estate issues. He also provided representation to various hospitals, doctors, and other health care providers. During his legal career, Kelly served on the Utah Supreme Court Advising Committee on the Rules of Evidence for many years and was elected president of the Young Lawyers Discussion of the Utah State Bar in 1992.

Kelly was appointed as a Third District Court Judge, to serve Salt Lake County, Summit County, and Tooele Counties in November 2009, by Governor Gary Herbert. He was one of five candidates chosen to fill the position of Sheila McCleve. Gary Herbert told the media, "Keith has an impressive breadth and depth of experience that will serve the state of Utah well. Keith’s knowledge, thoughtfulness and familiarity with the law will make him a fine jurist".
