Background

Spillar is a magna cum laude graduate of Texas Christian University. She holds a Master of Science interdisciplinary degree in Economics and Urban Studies from Trinity University.

Political activism

When asked when she had become a feminist, Spillar told an interviewer, "I think I was born a feminist." In 1992, under Spillar and Dolores Huerta's leadership, the Feminist Majority Foundation launched its Feminization of Power campaign, intended to inspire women to run for political office.

Spillar has led the struggle to ensure that women's reproductive health clinics are protected from extremist anti-abortion groups and to hold those groups accountable for violence against women. An expert on anti-abortion terrorism, Spillar played a key role in the Feminist Majority Foundation's landmark 1994 Supreme Court case that upheld the use of buffer zones to protect clinics. She will also appear in the upcoming film The Red Pill about the Men's right movement. It will be released late 2016.
