Kateryna Bondarenko

Biography

Bondarenko was born on August 8, 1986 in Kryvyi Rih, Ukrainian SSR (nowadays Ukraine) to father, Vladimir, and mother, Natalia. She was introduced to tennis at age 4 by her parents. She has two sisters, Valeria and Alona, both who used to play on the WTA Tour. Her favorite surface is Hard. She enjoys Russian Pop Music, playing chess, and reading books. In September 2011, Bondarenko married her coach, Denis Volodko. They then welcomed their first child, Karin, in 2013. Bondarenko has one cat (Pers) and one dog (Princess). She speaks Ukrainian, Russian, and English.

2008: 1st WTA title

Bondarenko began her season at the 2008 Moorilla Hobart International. She lost in the 1st round to World Number 144 Anna Lapushchenkova 6-3, 6-4. At the 2008 Australian Open, Bondarenko lost in the 1st round to World Number 69 Aravane Rezaï 7-6(4), 6-2. However, on 24 January 2008, paired with her sister Alona, she won the doubles tournament at the Australian Open without seeding, defeating in the final, the number 12-seeded pair Victoria Azarenka/Shahar Pe'er 2-6, 6-1, 6-4.

After the Australian Open, Bondarenko played for Ukraine in the tie against Belgium in the 2008 Fed Cup World Group II. She lost her 1st match to Yanina Wickmayer 7-6(5), 6-1. She then won her last match defeating Tamaryn Hendler 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. Ukraine defeated Belgium 3-2. At the 2008 Open Gaz de France, Bondarenko upset 5th seed and defending champion Nadia Petrova in the 1st round 7-6(4), 3-6, 6-4. In the 2nd round, she defeated qualifier and compatriot Yuliana Fedak 6-0, 6-3. In the quarterfinals, she lost to 4th seed Elena Dementieva 7-5, 6-2. In doubles, she parterned with her sister Alona, and they won the tournament defeating Czech pair Vladimíra Uhlířová/Eva Hrdinová in the final 6-1, 6-4. Bondarenko then played at the 2008 Proximus Diamond Games in Antwerp the week after competing in Paris. In the 1st round, she beat qualifier and compatriot Tatiana Perebiynis 7-6(1), 6-3. She then went out in the 2nd round to qualifier and young Russian Alisa Kleybanova 7-5, 3-6, 7-5. During the match, she suffered a left hip strain. In doubles, partnering up with her sister Alona, they lost in the semifinals to 2nd seeds Květa Peschke/Ai Sugiyama 6-1, 6-1. Kateryna's injury contributed to their loss. The left hip strain injury prevented her from playing at the 2008 Qatar Ladies Open in Qatar.

Bondarenko returned at the 2008 Pacific Life Open. Seeded number 30 and getting a 1st round BYE, she was upset in the 2nd round by World Number 216 Jie Zheng 6-2, 6-4. At the 2008 Sony Ericsson Open, Bondarenko defeated Pauline Parmentier in the 1st round 6-1, 6-3. In the 2nd round, she lost to 10th seed Elena Dementieva 6-0, 6-4. Playing for Ukraine again at the 2008 Fed Cup World Group Play-offs, Ukraine faced Italy. Bondarenko played one rubber, but she lost to Italian Sara Errani 6-3, 6-2. In the end, Italy defeated Ukraine 3-2.

Bondarenko began her clay court season at the 2008 Qatar Telecom German Open. In the 1st round, she beat World Number 45 Tamira Paszek 6-4, 6-3. In the 2nd round, she lost to 7th seed and eventual finalist Elena Dementieva 6-1, 6-2. At the 2008 Internazionali BNL d'Italia, Bondarenko defeated World Number 53 and Italian Tathiana Garbin in the 1st round 7-5, 6-4. In the 2nd round, she lost to 6th seed Anna Chakvetadze 3-6, 7-6(1), 6-0. Playing at the 2008 Internationaux de Strasbourg, her final tournament before the French Open, Bondarenko lost in the 1st round to World Number 93 Petra Kvitová 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. At the 2008 French Open, Bondarenko lost in the 1st round to 13th seed and eventual finalist Dinara Safina 6-1, 6-3. However, in doubles, she and Alona reached the semifinals where they lost to Casey Dellacqua/Francesca Schiavone 6-2, 6-1.

Bondarenko began her grass court season at the 2008 DFS Classic in Birmingham. Seeded 12th, she defeated World Number 92 Anne Keothavong in the 1st round 6-3, 6-2. In the 2nd round, she beat qualifier Samantha Stosur 6-3, 6-2. In the 3rd round, she defeated Lucky Loser Melinda Czink 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 to reach her 2nd quarterfinal of the year. In the quarterfinals, she beat World Number 52 Petra Cetkovská 7-6(3), 6-2 to reach her 1st WTA semifinal. In the semifinals, she defeated World Number 64 Marina Erakovic 6-3, 6-2 to reach her 1st WTA singles final. In the final, Bondarenko defeated World Number 85 Yanina Wickmayer 7-6(7), 3-6, 7-6(4) to win her 1st and only WTA singles title. The week after, Bondarenko played at the 2008 Ordina Open. She lost in the 1st round to qualifier and eventual champion Tamarine Tanasugarn 6-3, 6-3. At the 2008 Wimbledon Championships, Bondarenko defeated qualifier Rika Fujiwara in the 1st round 1-6, 6-4, 6-3. In the 2nd round, she lost to 4th seed Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-2, 6-3.

Bondarenko began her US Open Series at the 2008 Bank of the West Classic. In the 1st round, she beat World Number 72 Ashley Harkleroad 7-5, 6-2. In the 2nd round, Bondarenko lost to World Number 32 Dominika Cibulková 6-2, 6-3. At the 2008 East West Bank Classic, Bondarenko lost in the 1st round to World Number 122 Meng Yuan 2-6, 7-6(5), 6-4. Seeded 7th at the 2008 Nordea Nordic Light Open, Bondarenko lost in the 1st round to World Number 77 Camille Pin 6-4, 7-6(3). Bondarenko represented Ukraine at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. She lost in the 1st round to 5th seed and eventual gold medalist Elena Dementieva 6-1, 6-4. This is the 4th time this year that Bondarenko has lost to Dementieva. In doubles, she and Alona reached the semifinals where they lost to 2nd seeds Serena Williams/Venus Williams 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. In the Bronze Medal match, they lost to Chinese pair Yan Zi/Jie Zheng 6-2, 6-2. Due to their loss in the Bronze Medal match, they ended in 4th place. Bondarenko lost in the 1st round at the 2008 US Open to 4th seed and eventual champion Serena Williams 6-1, 6-4. In doubles, she and Alona lost in the 3rd round to 10th seeds and eventual finalists Lisa Raymond/Samantha Stosur 7-6(3), 6-3.

Bondarenko qualified for the 2008 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix defeating Lucie Hradecká in the final round of qualifying 6-2, 6-2. In the 1st round, she beat World Number 15 Flavia Pennetta 4-6, 6-2, 6-1. In the 2nd round, Bondarenko lost to 6th seed Venus Williams 6-4, 6-2. At the 2008 Kremlin Cup, Bondarenko lost in the 1st round of qualifying to Aravane Rezaï 6-0, 3-6, 6-1. At the 2008 Zurich Open, Bondarenko lost in the final round of qualifying to Monica Niculescu 6-1, 6-1. Playing her final tournament of the year, the 2008 Generali Ladies Linz, Bondarenko lost in the 1st round to 5th seed Nadia Petrova 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.

Bondarenko ended the year ranked 63 in singles and 10 in doubles.

2009: US Open quarterfinal

Bondarenko began her season at the 2009 Brisbane International. She lost in the 1st round to 2nd seed and eventual champion Victoria Azarenka 6-0, 6-2. Next, Bondarenko played at the 2009 Moorilla Hobart International. She lost in the 1st round to World Number 57 Magdaléna Rybáriková 4-6, 7-6(6), 6-1. In doubles, Bondarenko partnered with her sister Alona. They reached the final where they lost to Gisela Dulko/Flavia Pennetta 6-2, 7-6(4). At the 2009 Australian Open, Bondarenko upset 9th seed Agnieszka Radwańska in the 1st round 7-6(7), 4-6, 6-1. In the 2nd round, she beat World Number 90 Lourdes Domínguez Lino 7-5, 7-5. In the 3rd round, Bondarenko lost to 22nd seed Jie Zheng 6-2, 6-2.

2012: Retirement from tennis

Bondarenko started off her 2012 season by playing doubles at the 2012 Moorilla Hobart International. Partnering with Anastasia Rodionova, they defeated Shuko Aoyama/Irina Falconi in the 1st round 6-2, 0-6, 10-6. In the quarterfinals, they upset 1st seeds Lucie Hradecká/Anabel Medina Garrigues 7-6(3), 3-6, 10-6. In the semifinals, they lost to 3rd seeds Chuang Chia-jung/Marina Erakovic 3-6, 6-1, 10-4. Bondarenko next participated at the 2012 Australian Open. In the 1st round, she lost to World Number 66 Vania King 7-6(3), 6-3.

After the Australian Open, Bondarenko played for Ukraine in the Fed Cup tie against Italy. She lost both of her matches to Sara Errani 6-2, 6-3 and Francesca Schiavone 6-7(6), 7-5, 6-4. Italy defeated Ukraine 3-2. Seeded 6th for qualifying at the 2012 Qatar Total Open, Bondarenko qualified beating Alizé Lim 6-1, 6-3 and 13th seed Casey Dellacqua 6-3, 6-1. In the 1st round, she beat fellow qualifier Vera Dushevina 7-5, 6-2. In the 2nd round, she defeated World Number 23 Flavia Pennetta 6-4, 6-2. In the 3rd round, Bondarenko lost to World Number 31 Monica Niculescu 7-6(5), 6-4. Playing qualifying at the 2012 Dubai Tennis Championships, Bondarenko was beaten in the 2nd round of qualifying by Aleksandra Wozniak 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-1. Seeded 2nd for qualifying at the 2012 BNP Paribas Open, Bondarenko lost in the 1st round of qualifying to Paula Ormaechea 7-6(3), 6-4. Seeded 1st in qualifying at the 2012 Sony Ericsson Open, Bondarenko qualified defeating Mirjana Lučić in the final round of qualifying 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. In the 1st round, she beat fellow qualifier Urszula Radwańska 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-4. In the 2nd round, Bondarenko lost to 20th seed Daniela Hantuchová in a tough match 6-7(4), 6-2, 7-6(4).

Bondarenko began her clay court season at the 2012 Family Circle Cup. In the 1st round, she defeated World Number 84 Olga Govortsova 2-6, 6-2, 6-4. In the 2nd round, Bondarenko lost easily to 4th seed Vera Zvonareva 6-1, 6-1. Playing qualifying at the 2012 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix, Bondarenko reached the final round of qualifying where she lost to Anna Chakvetadze 6-3, 7-6(2). Still entering the draw as a Lucky Loser, Bondarenko lost in the 1st round to qualifier Gréta Arn 7-5, 6-3. At the 2012 Internazionali BNL d'Italia, Bondarenko retired in the 1st round of qualifying trailing 7-6(3) to Anastasia Rodionova. At the 2012 Brussels Open, she lost in the 1st round to 10th seed Nadia Petrova 6-4, 6-4. Playing at the 2012 French Open, Bondarenko lost in the 1st round to qualifier Chan Yung-jan 6-1, 7-6(8).

Bondarenko played only 1 grass court tournament to prepare for Wimbledon. At the 2012 UNICEF Open, Bondarenko upset 2nd seed and World Number 10 Sara Errani in the 1st round 5-7, 6-3, 6-4. In the 2nd round, she lost to World Number 53 Kim Clijsters 6-2, 6-1. At the 2012 Wimbledon Championships, Bondarenko beat World Number 82 Kimiko Date-Krumm in the 1st round 5-7, 6-3, 6-3. She was eliminated in the 2nd round by 14th seed Ana Ivanovic 6-3, 7-6(3). Bondarenko had led their Head to Head 2-0.

After Wimbledon, Bondarenko played the 2012 Swedish Open. In the 1st round, she defeated qualifier Carina Witthöft 6-2, 7-6(5). In the 2nd round, she lost to 7th seed Mona Barthel 6-2, 7-5. Representing Ukraine at the 2012 Summer Olympics, Bondarenko lost in the 1st round to 6th seed Petra Kvitová 6-4, 5-7, 6-4.

Playing qualifying at the 2012 Western & Southern Open, Bondarenko lost in the final round of qualifying to Eleni Daniilidou 6-3, 7-6(2). At the 2012 New Haven Open at Yale, Bondarenko was defeated in the 1st round of qualifying by Anastasia Rodionova 7-6(4), 6-2. At the 2012 US Open, the final tournament of her career, Bondarenko lost in the 1st round to 30th seed and former World Number 1 Jelena Janković 6-1, 6-2.

Bondarenko then retired from the WTA Tour due to being pregnant.

2014: Return from pregnancy

Bondarenko made her return in the qualifying for the Katowice Open, where she lost to Slovakia's Kristína Kučová in two sets.

At the French Open she lost in the first round of qualifying to Indy de Vroome. She made a quarterfinal at the 10k ITF event in Budapest, Hungary and also at the 25k event in Kristinehamn, where she won the doubles partnering Cornelia Lister from Sweden. She lost to Kateřina Siniaková in three sets in the first round of qualifying for Bad Gastein, and in the second round of qualifying against Yulia Putintseva at Båstad after beating Stephanie Vogt in two sets.

Bondarenko managed to qualify for Baku by beating Jovana Jakšić in straight sets but she lost in the first round to Julia Glushko in three sets. She received a wildcard into the first round of Tashkent where she fell to the top seed and defending champion Bojana Jovanovski in a tight three set match. She won a 25k event in Monterrey by beating Ana Vrljić 6-1 7-5. A few weeks later she won a 50k event in Macon by beating Grace Min in the final in two sets. Her last tournament of the year was 50k event in Captiva Island, where she was beaten by Julia Glushko in three sets.

2015: Back in game

Bondarenko began her 2015 year by playing qualifying at the 2015 Australian Open. She lost in the 2nd round of qualifying to 22nd seed Laura Siegemund 6-4, 6-2.

After the Australian Open, Bondarenko played qualifying at the 2015 Diamond Games. She qualified for her 1st Premier-level tournament since coming back to the WTA Tour by defeating Dinah Pfizenmaier in the final round of qualifying 6-1, 6-1. In the 1st round, Bondarenko lost to 6th seed Dominika Cibulková 6-1, 6-2. At the 2015 Abierto Mexicano Telcel, Bondarenko lost in the 2nd round of qualifying to 6th seed Richèl Hogenkamp 6-3, 6-3. She then played qualifying at the 2015 Monterrey Open where she lost in the final round of qualifying to 4th seed Tímea Babos 7-5, 2-6, 6-4.

Bondarenko began her clay court season at the 2015 Family Circle Cup. Seeded 15th in qualifying, Bondarenko qualified by defeating Beatriz Haddad Maia in the final round of qualifying 6-3, 7-6(10). In the 1st round, she had her 1st WTA Tour win since she returned from retirement by beating American Alison Riske 6-4, 4-6, 6-1. In the 2nd round, Bondarenko lost to American, 7th seed, and eventual finalist Madison Keys 6-2, 6-1. Bondarenko qualified for the 2015 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix by beating Alexa Glatch in the final round of qualifying 0-6, 6-4, 6-4. In the 1st round, she lost to Lucie Šafářová 7-6(8), 6-4. At the 2015 J&T Banka Prague Open, Bondarenko lost in the 2nd round of qualifying to 6th seed Danka Kovinić 6-3, 6-4. However, in doubles, Bondarenko partnered up with Eva Hrdinová. She and her partner reached the final, but they lost to Belinda Bencic/Kateřina Siniaková 6-2, 6-2. At the 2015 Mutua Madrid Open, Bondarenko lost in the 1st round of qualifying to 14th seed Marina Erakovic 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. Playing qualifying at the 2015 French Open, Bondarenko lost in the final round of qualifying to Alexa Glatch 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.

Bondarenko began her grass court season by playing qualifying at the 1st edition of the 2015 Aegon Open Nottingham. She lost in the 1st round of qualifying to compatriot Olga Savchuk 6-1, 6-2. At the 2015 Aegon Classic, Bondarenko qualified by beating 13th seed Yanina Wickmayer in the final round of qualifying 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-3. In the 1st round, she lost to Zarina Diyas 7-6(7), 7-6(5). Seeded 10th for qualifying at the 2015 Wimbledon Championships, Bondarenko was defeated in the 2nd round of qualifying by Elise Mertens 6-4, 7-6(6).

After Wimbledon, Bondarenko played at the 2015 BRD Bucharest Open. In the 1st round, she lost to Shahar Pe'er 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. Seeded 4th for qualifying at the 2015 İstanbul Cup, Bondarenko successfully qualified by beating Hiroko Kuwata 6-3, 6-2 and Nastassja Burnett 3-6, 6-3, 6-0. In the 1st round, Bondarenko upset 1st seed Venus Williams 6-4, 7-6(4). In the 2nd round, she defeated Mona Barthel 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. In the quarterfinals, Bondarenko lost in a close match to compatriot and eventual champion Lesia Tsurenko 7-6(13), 7-5. At the 2015 Baku Cup, Bondarenko beat qualifier Valentyna Ivakhnenko in the 1st round 6-1, 6-2. In the 2nd round, she retired trailing 0-3 to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova due to a right lower leg injury.

Bondarenko started her US Open Series by playing qualifying at the 2015 Bank of the West Classic. Seeded 2nd, she qualified by defeating wildcard Caroline Doyle 6-0, 6-0 and 6th seed Petra Martić 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. In the 1st round, she lost to 8th seed and compatriot Elina Svitolina 4-6, 6-4, 7-5. Bondarenko qualified for the 2015 Western & Southern Open beating 19th seed Lara Arruabarrena 6-1, 6-4 and Jana Čepelová 6-3, 6-0. In the 1st round, she lost in a tough match to World Number 26 Eugenie Bouchard 7-6(2), 7-6(5). Seeded 6th for qualifying at the 2015 US Open, Bondarenko made it through qualifying to qualify for the main draw defeating 18th seed Nao Hibino in the final round of qualifying 6-1, 6-1. In the 1st round, she beat World Number 78 Yulia Putintseva 6-0, 6-3. In the 2nd round, Bondarenko lost with a fight to 2nd seed Simona Halep 6-3, 6-4. This performance made her re-enter the Top 90 in the rankings.

After the US Open, Bondarenko turned to the Asian swing. At the 2015 Japan Women's Open, Bondarenko upset 1st seed Carla Suárez Navarro in the 1st round 6-4, 6-4. In the 2nd round, she beat Jarmila Gajdošová 6-1, 3-6, 6-4. In the quarterfinals, Bondarenko lost to eventual champion Yanina Wickmayer 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Seeded 3rd for qualifying at the 2015 Toray Pan Pacific Open, Bondarenko qualified defeating 6th seed Nao Hibino in the last round of qualifying 6-3, 6-4. In the 1st round, she lost to 6th seed Carla Suárez Navarro 7-6(3), 6-2. Seeded 15th for qualifying at the 2015 China Open, Bondarenko made it through qualifying by beating 4th seed Heather Watson in the final round of qualifying 6-3, 6-4. In the 1st round, Bondarenko defeated Barbora Strýcová 6-3, 6-2. In the 2nd round, she lost to 14th seed Madison Keys 3-6, 6-1, 6-0. Her final tournament of the year was the 2015 Tianjin Open. In the 1st round, Bondarenko lost to eventual finalist Danka Kovinić 6-4, 6-1.

Bondarenko ended the year ranked 88.

2016

Bondarenko started her 2016 year by playing qualifying at the 2016 Brisbane International. She qualified for the main draw by beating Naomi Osaka in the final round of qualifying 7-6(7), 4-6, 6-4. In the 1st round, Bondarenko lost to World Number 40 Madison Brengle 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. After Brisbane, Bondarenko played qualifying at the 2016 Hobart International. She lost in the 1st round of qualifying to Pauline Parmentier 6-2, 6-2. At the 2016 Australian Open, Bondarenko defeated World Number 67 Ajla Tomljanović in the 1st round 7-6(2), 6-3. In the 2nd round, she earned her 1st win over 23rd seed Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-1, 7-5 to reach the 3rd round for the 1st time since 2009. In the 3rd round, Bondarenko lost to 12th seed Belinda Bencic 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.

Playing qualifying at the 2016 Dubai Tennis Championships, Bondarenko beat Anastasija Sevastova in the 1st round of qualifying 6-3, 6-3. In the 2nd round of qualifying, she lost to Tsvetana Pironkova 6-2, 6-1. Bondarenko successfully qualified for the 2016 Qatar Total Open defeating María José Martínez Sánchez 7-6(0), 3-6, 6-3 and 9th seed Evgeniya Rodina 6-2, 7-5. In the 1st round, she defeated World Number 40 Annika Beck 6-4, 6-4. In the 2nd round, Bondarenko lost to 3rd seed Agnieszka Radwańska 6-4, 6-4. At the 2016 BNP Paribas Open, Bondarenko qualified for the main draw beating Paula Kania 6-0, 6-4 and 19th seed Lourdes Domínguez Lino 6-4, 6-0. In the 1st round, she defeated World Number 46 Alison Van Uytvanck 6-2, 6-7(2), 6-2. In the 2nd round, she rallied to upset 24th seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-2, 6-7(1), 6-4. In the 3rd round, she beat compatriot and World Number 36 Lesia Tsurenko 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(7) to reach the 4th round for the 1st time at the Indian Wells Masters. In the 4th round, Bondarenko lost to 1st seed and World Number 1 Serena Williams 6-2, 6-2. Nevertheless, this was her best result at Indian Wells. At the 2016 Miami Open, Bondarenko lost in the 1st round to World Number 36 Daria Kasatkina 6-2, 1-6, 6-2.

Bondarenko began her clay court season at the 2016 Volvo Car Open. In the 1st round, she upset 16th seed Misaki Doi 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. In the 2nd round, Bondarenko lost to qualifier Kristína Kučová 0-6, 6-3, 6-3. Seeded 7th at the 2016 İstanbul Cup, Bondarenko defeated World Number 98 Olga Govortsova in the 1st round 5-7, 6-3, 6-4. In the 2nd round, she lost again to qualifier Kristína Kučová 6-3, 1-6, 7-5. At the 2016 Mutua Madrid Open, Bondarenko lost in the 1st round of qualifying to Kateřina Siniaková 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. Her final tournament before the French Open was the 2016 Internationaux de Strasbourg. In the 1st round, she beat World Number 54 Heather Watson 6-3, 0-6, 6-1. In the 2nd round, Bondarenko lost to 7th seed Elena Vesnina 6-4, 7-5. At the 2016 French Open, Bondarenko upset 7th seed Roberta Vinci in the 1st round 6-1, 6-3. In the 2nd round, she lost to World Number 39 Annika Beck 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.

Bondarenko began her grass court season by playing qualifying at the 2016 Aegon Classic Birmingham. She lost in the final round of qualifying to 5th seed and grass court specialist Tsvetana Pironkova 7-5, 6-4. At the 2016 Aegon International Eastbourne, Bondarenko qualified beating Carina Witthöft 7-6(1), 6-2 and Anett Kontaveit 7-5, 1-6, 6-4. In the 1st round, she defeated World Number 38 Yulia Putintseva 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. In the 2nd round, Bondarenko upset 6th seed Svetlana Kuznetsova 2-6, 6-4, 7-5. In the 3rd round, she lost to 12th seed and eventual champion Dominika Cibulková 7-6(3), 6-3. At the 2016 Wimbledon Championships, Bondarenko lost in the 1st round to 27th seed Coco Vandeweghe 6-2, 7-6(3).

Bondarenko began the US Open Series by competing at the 2016 Bank of the West Classic. She lost in the 1st round to World Number 156 Urszula Radwańska 6-4, 7-5. Bondarenko qualified for the 2016 Rogers Cup beating Xu Yifan 6-0, 6-1 and wildcard Bianca Andreescu 6-2, 6-1. In the 1st round, she lost to 14th seed Karolína Plíšková 3-6, 6-2, 7-5. Bondarenko qualified for the 2016 Western & Southern Open defeating wildcard Sofia Kenin 6-1, 6-2 and wildcard Jamie Loeb 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. In the 1st round, she lost to World Number 37 Kristina Mladenovic 7-6(1), 6-3. Playing qualifying at the 2016 Connecticut Open, Bondarenko defeated wildcard Julia Elbaba in the 1st round of qualifying 6-3, 6-2. In the 2nd round of qualifying, she retired trailing 1-3 to Nicole Gibbs. In doubles, she and her partner Chuang Chia-jung reached the final where they lost to 2nd seeds Sania Mirza/Monica Niculescu 7-5, 6-4. At the 2016 US Open, Bondarenko defeated Hsieh Su-Wei in the 1st round 6-0, 7-5. In the 2nd round, she beat World Number 61 Saisai Zheng in a tough match 5-7, 7-6(5), 7-5. After the match, a fan jumped onto the court trying to engage Bondarenko, but ends up getting arrested. In the 3rd round, Bondarenko lost to World Number 48 Anastasija Sevastova 6-4, 6-1.

At the 2016 Japan Women's Open, Bondarenko lost in the 1st round to World Number 75 Louisa Chirico 6-4, 7-5. Bondarenko qualified for the 2016 Toray Pan Pacific Open defeating 8th seed Aleksandra Krunić in the final round of qualifying 6-0, 6-2. In the 1st round, she lost to World Number 35 Anastasija Sevastova 7-6(3), 6-3. At the 2016 Wuhan Open, Bondarenko lost in the 2nd round of qualifying to 6th seed Alizé Cornet 6-2, 6-1. Her final tournament of the year was the 2016 China Open. She lost in the 1st round of qualifying to Xinyun Han 2-6, 7-6(5), 6-4.

2017

Bondarenko began the year playing qualifying at the 2017 Brisbane International. Seeded 1st in qualifying, Bondarenko made it to the final round of qualifying where she lost to Asia Muhammad 6-4, 0-6, 6-1. However, she made it into the main draw as a Lucky Loser. In the 1st round, she lost in a thriller to 8th seed Roberta Vinci 7-6(4), 6-7(4), 7-6(5). In doubles, she and Yulia Putintseva lost in the 1st round to Irina-Camelia Begu/Daria Kasatkina 6-2, 6-0. Next, Bondarenko played qualifying at the 2017 Apia International Sydney. Seeded 5th, she qualified defeating Naomi Broady in the final round of qualifying 6-1, 6-1. In the 1st round, she lost to fellow qualifier Christina McHale 4-6, 7-5, 6-2. In doubles, she and Yulia Putintseva lost in the 1st round to 2nd seeds Martina Hingis/Coco Vandeweghe 6-2, 6-3. At the 2017 Australian Open, Bondarenko lost in the 1st round to 21st seed Caroline Garcia 7-6(4), 6-4.

At the 2017 Qatar Total Open, Bondarenko lost in the 2nd round of qualifying to 1st seed Christina McHale 7-5, 6-1. Competing at the 2017 Dubai Tennis Championships, Bondarenko won her 1st singles match of the year defeating qualifier Aryna Sabalenka in the 1st round 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. In the 2nd round, Bondarenko won when 5th seed Garbiñe Muguruza retired at 4-1 in the opening set due to a left achilles injury. In the 3rd round, Bondarenko lost to 10th seed and eventual finalist Caroline Wozniacki 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.
