Karungulam is a village in Tamil Nadu, India. There are several villages in the same name of Karungulam in Tamil Nadu, but the village Karungulam where Vagulagiri Hill exists is a well known and famous one. After the bifurcation of Tirunelveli District this village has come under the jurisdiction of Tuticorin District.

Lord Marthandeswara Temple is at the very entrance of this village, and so it is also called as Marthandam Karungulam. The unique feature of this temple is that the Navagrahas are with their wives. In Agathiar Naadi Jothidam some of the people are asked to worship this Navagrahas with wives, which shows that it is very old. This village is surrounded by a very few tanks and the water in these tanks is blackish in colour and hence it has acquired this fantastic name.
Sri Santhanamari Amman temple which is managed by the yadava community people of Karungulam is at the southern border;Sri Vadakku Vasal Selvi at the northeastern border;Sri Angala Eshvari at the western border;Sri. Kulasekari sameytha Marthandeshwarar at the northern border at the entrance of the village and Lords Venkatesa and Srinivasa at the top of the hill looking at the village saving and protecting the villagers from evils, communicable diseases and other dangers.
It is interesting to know how the hill at Karungulam acquired the name Vagulagiri. Once upon a time this hill was flourished and covered with beautiful Vagulam Flowers and so it has acquired this name .
The Thamiraparani river flows on the eastern side of this village parallel to the Tirunelveli -Tiruchendur High road. It is believed that the Pushkarani water of Tirupathy adds to Thamiraparani water and makes it sacred. Have a bath in Thamiraparani before going for darshan at vagulagiri makes one purified from sins and elevate him to a peaceful life.
This village is very near to the Athichanallur where ancient civilized people lived. Many edges of Tazhi or big pots used to bury the dead bodies are protruding in the earth surface in the ground portion of Kotai Vasal. Coins and mud vessels have obtained in some places where the ground is dug for laying foundation to new houses. Further archaeological probings may bring out the ancient history of this village
It is believed that many Siddas have lived in Vagulagiri and even now some are still living in Sukshma and Sthula forms. Rishi Agathiyar has visited this hill several times. Vagulagiri Mahatmiam is a small recorded palm chuvadi in which the existence of Gods at this hill is depicted. How,why and by whom the Vagulagiri Lords are consecrated is also explained From the krantham scripts it was later translated into Tamil by Brammasri. Venkatachala Sastrigal of this village. Baagligam is an ancient country in India. Kalharam is a state in this country. King Subakandan reigned this fertile wealthy state.The people of this state had good regard for his sovereignty. But Subakandan was not happy. He had a deep cancer like wound on his neck.He suffered severe unbearable pain. No native doctor of this village could cure it. In the course of time the wound spreat out, worms produced and unbearable pain persisted. What cannot be cured by doctors are easily cured by our deep prayer towards God.Subakandan had good faith in Lord of the seven hills. Sri Venkatachalapathy. He started to Tiruppathy to pay homage to the abiding Lord there. He stayed there for a long time doing prayers, penances and arathanas with full of heart. He prayed Him sincerely with songs and slokas for relief of the pain. The Lord came into his dream and asked him to erect a chariot made from the good variety of Sandal Wood available in the nearby forest. After the erection of the chariot two sticks would remain. The Lord told the king that He himself would prevail in these sticks The Lord also asked the king to carry these sticks to the southern parts of India and to a village called Krishna Thadagam or Karungulam and approach the small hill there and find a suitable place.to fix it. These actions would bring a permanent cure to his disease. The king acted accordingly and consecrated these sandal sticks in between the holy tamarind tree called Urangapuli and the existing Sri Srnivasa temple. From this time two Lords Sri Venkatachalapathy and sri.srinivasa with Sridevi and Boodevi are worshipped by the people in this temple.
Vagulagiri
Vagulagiri is a small hillock situated on the southern bank of Thamparapani If we go from Tirunelveli to Thiruchendur by road we can visit several temples on both the sides of river TAMPARAPARANI. Vagulari is the first temple we can see upon a hillock at Karungulam. We can see two temples with gopuram, one on the foot of the hillock and the other upon the hillock. Vagulagiri hill is situated at the northeastern side of Ka of Karungulam village The people of this village are staunch devotees of Lord Venkatachalapathy, the main deity on the hill temple. This Lord has come from Thiruppathy. The enshrined god in this temple is in the form of two sticks (THARKALS) Which are used to drive the car in the temple car festival. These sticks are made up of sandalwood and placed close to each other and consecrated in the Sanctum Sanctorum The devotees of this Lord are working in various fields and get employed not only in India but world over. All are well off. They think that they have attained their present status by the Anugragam or grace of Lord Venkatachalapathy. Many devotees come to Karungulam for the Chithira festival of this temple and offer their prayers to lord Venkatachalapathy and take part in the activities of the 10th day Chithirai festival Except a very few festivals the other festivals are financed by the devotees. The residents of this village contact the other outside devotees by mails, letters festival invitations to inform them what is happening at the temples of this village every now and then. Apart from the chithirai festival, Puratasi Sani Garuda Sevai is celebrated in all the Saturdays of Puratasi month. Pavithrothsavam Festival is celebrated for three days in the month of July. A com mittee called Pavithrothsava Committee conducts this festival every year. Vishnu Sahasranama Laksharchana is celebrated every year and concludes with a grand Pushpanchali on the day of Masi Magam. Marthanthandeswarar Temple at the foot of the hill is also a famous temple and it can be seen in separate headings; Festivals of Vagulagiri and Foot hill temple.

Sthala Purana's are written by scholars describing the importance and significance of places and temples. This work not only enables us to have an insight into history but also enrich our knowledge of local customs and local culture. Vagulagiri Magathmiyam is the Sthala Puranam written by Bramasri K. Venkatachala Sastrigal. He has translated it in Tamil from the original palm tree Suvadi. From this book we are able to know the history of Vagulagiri. We know how the main idol in the Venkatachalapathy Temple is incarnated who incarnated it,why the form of this Lord is figureless and why it is made up of a sandalwood tree, etc.
