Kanseil is a Medieval Metal and Folk Metal band that was born in Fregona, Veneto, Italy in 2011. It's named after the ancient name of Cansiglio, its home-place's mountains that are often told about in its songs. The band has an own style, that assembles early medieval melodies and traditional folk sounds from all over Europe, with death and black metal riffs, along with acoustic assembles in an ancient-fashioned atmosphere. The band realized the self-produced demo “Tzimbar Bint” in 2013, than it started playing on many stages at local events all over Italy and Europe sharing the stage with a lot of other underground and international metal bands. In 2014 the band join the roster of Nemeton Records. In May 2015 Kanseil released their first full-length “Doin Earde”!

Kanseil is what probably was the ancient name of Cansiglio, the place in the Italian Alps where we the band born. The origins of the name are really ancient and the meaning is still uncertain.

History

The band started up when they were really young as a group of friends who shared the passion for Metal Music and their homeland. They began to write their first tunes in 2011 and they recorded and released their first demo “Tzimbar Bint” in 2013. They played a lot of shows among Italy in 2013-2014 and then they come back into the studio to record their first full length “Doin Earde” released the 20th of May (2015) for Nemeton Records. The band describes their last album as Folk-Medieval Metal with various influences like black, doom, thrash and death metal, which makes album’s style really hard to describe with few words. They share stories and traditions of their land through their music and lyrics.

(Focus on Lyrics)

Kanseil KANSEIL

LO SPIRITO DELLA NOTTE: It means “the spirit of the night”. That’s a poetry, a prelude, a recall to the quietness and majesty of nature for the listener. It’s the evocation for a cold an obscure atmosphere, man can only submit to and respect its holy silence.

CIADA DELÀMIS: A Ladin legend, about Cansiglio. The tale’s about a rich chieftain from Pustertal, which due to his jealousy lost his wife and everything he owned. He’s going to fight the warlocks of the wild Ciada Delàmis (Cansiglio), in order to free his loved one from the Birta Odlata (the hex) which kept her soul imprisoned into the shape of a horse. The warlocks were so powerful riding the bear, they could dig huge holes into the earth and create the lakes Morto and Santa Croce during the fight.

DOIN EARDE: Doin Earde means “your land”, that’s a call to contact with nature, and a complaint to the repetition of history: who detains power, makes profit and spoils the land, but who pays the consequences are those who live within the nature. It’s a lyric rich in references, but also in hope. That’s a wake up for what they’re doing to us while we don’t even figure out.

PANEVÌN: Panevìn is the ancient rite for the winter solstice celebrated on January 5 night, where “se brusa ła vecia” (the old woman is burned), that represents the past year leaving the place for the new one. (Someone thinks that's a remainder of the witch hunt, very unusual under the Venice’s republic, or it may come from the offering of human sacrifices in some very far away time). Families and communities summon to sing and dance and celebrate. According to the tradition, you can predict how the year will be for the crops by looking at the direction the smoke flies in.

AIS UN SNEA: Those are two strophes of a cimbrian song; it means “ice and snow”. The song talks about the ice melting, the circle of life and the human nature: the man is here today, but one day he will not. The lyric is from the 19th century, it was found in a church in Asiago. They put it on music with an own arrangement.

MAŽARÒL: Mazarol is a wood-elf who lives and travel across their mountains, and many would swear they met him, and many tales are told about him. He’s dressed up in red and wields a thick stick. According to the legend whoever steps on his footprints is made to follow them, and get lost in the forest. However, if respected, you will earn his trust, and he might help find your way back when you’re lost, or make some work for you overnight, so you can spend time with your family.

BUS DE LA LUM: The Bus de la Lum (the hole of the lights) Cansiglio’s deepest ponor, a huge scary hole in the forest, that was believed to be the world’s deepest hole in the past. It’s a feared and respected place believed to be sacred since ever. It’s the home of Anduane (the witches of the water) and scares the locals because of the frequent appearance of will-o'-the-wisps. It was considered a source of energy, and an entrance to the underworld. This place was sadly where many people were killed and thrown inside the Bus de la Lum during the partisan war in WWII.

BOSC DA REME: Cansiglio under the republic of Venice had the title “Gran bosco da reme di San Marco” (Great San Marco’s oar wood) because they used its beeches for making the long oars for the battleships and nobody was allowed to enter it. Venice here in Cansiglio made the world’s very first laws for management and maintenance of woods. The border of off limit zone’ border line was kept by some huge stones that locals used to secretly move in order to get more place for pastures. Cansiglio’s beeches were so valuable and unique for their quality (long and straight) and the easy way the logs could get to Venice by the river Piave, led by some men called žatèr (rafters), that did this very dangerous job. The story brings to the battle of Lepanto on October 7, 1571. The song is actually about the violence and cruelty of war, and that war is actually badly equipped poor people who fight someone else’s war, which stays at home. Economics wars between burglars, now as then.

TZIMBAR BINT: This song is about the land, the origins, and the wish to rediscover our own culture and history. “Tzimbar Bint” means “cimbrian wind” (cimbrians are a local ethnic group of old-German language). It’s the desire to touch the origins, in a world where everything is fleeting and superficial.

LA SERA: It means “the evening”, it’s the awaiting for it, for the end of a cycle. It’s about to letting to go forward silently without regrets, into the night’s peace. Maybe a last one, a last moment of peace.

VAJONT: This song is about the Vajont’s tragedy, October 9, 1963 260 million m³ rocks fell on the artificial lake of the dam, causing death to 2000 people and destroying the town of Longarone and the villages nearby all at once, with a huge deadly wave. The landslide was natural, in an uninhabited place, but the reason this is an unforgivable crime is that the SADE society didn’t just build the world’s biggest dam in the wrong place, despite many opposed its building, but also did nothing for alert and evacuate the area even if they knew days before it was going to fall. This happened for greed, and fear of responsibility. As usual, culprits remain unpunished, while thousands of people lost everything.
