Kamal Mehdi Abdullayev (born 1950 in Baku; Pseudonym: Kamal Abdulla) is an Azerbaijan philologist, the Rector of Azerbaijan Üniversite of Languages (from 01.07.2017)

Biography

He was born in Baku in 1950 to the family of intellectuals. His father was a teacher, the mother was a doctor. In 1968–1973, he studied literature and linguistics in the faculty of Philology at Baku State University,and in 1977 obtained a Ph.D. in the Department of Turkic languages of the Institute of Linguistics at Academy of Sciences of the USSR in Moscow. with a thesis “Syntactical Parallelism” (on the basis of the language of “Kitabi Dede-Gorgud” epos). From 1977 to 1984 he worked at the Department of Comparative Research of Turkic languages of the Institute of Linguistics at Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences, holding successively the positions of Junior researcher, Senior researcher, and Head of the Department.

In 1984, he upheld his Doctoral thesis “Theoretical Issues of Syntax in the Azerbaijani Language”. From 1984 to 1987 he worked in the department of General and Azerbaijani Linguistics at the Institute of Foreign Languages what is now the Azerbaijan University of Languages, rising to the professor and head of the department. During 1988–1990, he was the vice-chairman of the Azerbaijan Culture Fund. In 1990 he was elected head of the department of General and Russian Linguistics at the Institute of Russian Language and Literature (now named Baku Slavic University); from 1993 to 2000 he was head of the department General and Azerbaijan linguistics at the Institute of Foreign languages. In 1994–1995, he was the professor of Turkish language and Literature” in Bursa. Turke at Uludag University, In May 2000 he was appointed the Rector of the Institute of the Russian language and Literature named after M.F.Akhundov. In July 2017, he was appointed the Rector of the newly organized Azerbaijan University of Languages.

Career and awards

He is the head of “The Issues of Translation” scientific – research laboratory at BSU; and the author and executor of the series of “The Library of Philologist – 100”; “Turkology” and “The World Prose”. He is the editor – in – chief of “Language – Literature” series of BSU Scientific works, and the chairman of the Council for Defence of Scientific Works. This Council includes in itself several specialities, such as Slavic languages, World Literature (Russian Literature), Comparative – Historical and Comparative – typological Linguistics. He is the chairman of Azerbaijan Creative Fund (former Azerbaijan Culture Fund); the member of the managing staff of Azerbaijan Writers Union, Theatre figures Society and Azerbaijan Press Council. He is the president of Azerbaijan Badminton Federation. He is the author of researches in the field of Ancient Epic Literature of Turkic peoples. He gave lectures and special courses dedicated to “General Linguistics”, “Text Syntax”, and to the cultural aspects of “Kitabi – Dede Gorgud” epos at Universities in very many different countries, such as Russia, Poland, France, Germany, USA and so on...

His scientific and media articles are regularly published both in Azerbaijan and abroad. He is the author of many books on Linguistics, such as, “On Syntax of Simple Sentence in the Azerbaijani Language” (Baku, Elm, 1983), and many more ... please compare the list of literature. In his books on Literature studies and literary criticism, such as, “Author – Text – Reader” (Baku, Yazichi, 1985) he writes about problematic aspects of world literature and highlights the invisible aspects of ancient and modern literary processes. He wrote and published many books on Gorgud studies, such as, “Secret Dede Gorgud” (1991).
