Rao was the founder president of Telugu Association of North America (TANA), an umbrella organisation for Telugu speaking people in the United States.
Rao joined Nizam Orthopedic Hospital and did much to improve it. Today, NIMS is prestigious medical institute of excellence in patient service, education, training and research.
The Government of India honoured Rao with the Padma Shri on 26 January 2000, in recognition of his valuable contributions in the field of medicine.
