KVOE-FM (101.7 FM) is a radio station broadcasting a country music format, broadcasting as "Country 101.7 FM". The station is located in Emporia, Kansas, where it is also licensed. KVOE-FM is owned by Emporia's Radio Stations, Inc.

History

KVOE (AM) purchased 101.7 FM and began airing in 1984 as KEGS, but was later changed to KVOE in the mid 1990s when KVOE purchased, sister station, Mix 104.9 KFFX. For more than 70 years, KVOE has been the Voice of Emporia, as the only station in the market providing live and local news, weather, and sports.

Awards

KVOE has won numerous awards from the Kansas Association of Broadcasters. In 2005, KVOE won Station of the Year. In 2011, KVOE won KAB's Website of the Year. In 2010, KVOE won the KAB's Tony Jewell Community Service Award. On April 17, 2012, KVOE's general manager Ron Thomas, went to Las Vegas, Nevada to accept the Crystal Radio Award from the National Association of Broadcasters, one of which 10 out of 50 radio stations are awarded.

Community service

KVOE's biggest community service project each year is the Drive for Food, which collected over 22,000 non-perishable food items for The Salvation Army food pantry in 2011. KVOE also hosts the annual National Teachers Hall of Fame radio auction on the airwaves, which in 2011 raised $17,000. KVOE promotes local non-profit activities and fundraisers by airing interviews, announcements and remote broadcasts for free. In 2011, KVOE aired over 570 live interviews, over 5,000 minutes of PSAs, over 5,200 live reads, and over 60 free remote broadcasts. KVOE staff members, on a weekly basis, take turns delivering Friendship Meals to the elderly and shut-ins.

Programming

Throughout the day, a news team member, will give news updates on the hour. 13 WIBW meteorologists also give a weather update, each hour at :03 and :35 minutes past the hour. KVOE-FM plays programming from KJJJ, a country radio station located in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Sports

KVOE broadcasts surrounding area high school football and basketball games, calling it "Area High School Game of the Week," (AGOW) on Country 101.7 FM. Scott Hayes and Along with KVOE's AGOW, they broadcast "Area Coaches Corner", which is an interview with area coaches. They play two recordings a day, Mon-Fri, playing on KVOE-FM, and KVOE (AM). KVOE also broadcasts Kansas State Wildcats football and basketball games, as well as Kansas City Chiefs football games.
