KUTY signed on in 1957 as a Top 40 station as Radio 147, and was the only Top 40 station audible in the Antelope Valley. In the 1970s, KUTY flipped formats to Country music formatted Cutie Country.

Notable top 40 personalities

Some of the country's greatest DJ's got their start at KUTY during the 1960s including Don Imus, Bob Shannon, Pat Garrett, Bob Kingsley, Gary Marshall and Billy Pearl.

Format changes

In the late 1980s, with the advent of 103.1 KTPI, the station flipped to a Regional Mexican format as La Z 1470. The station was later sold to High Desert Broadcasting who made the station a part of the Radio Unica network in 1997, later changing to the Radio Lazer network. In 2004, Radio Lazer was moved to High Desert Broadcasting's newly acquired station KCEL, and KUTY flipped to an English Talk format as NewsTalk 1470 under guidance by Ray Cuneff. In September 2007, KUTY and KWJL swapped formats. NewsTalk 1470's local programming didn't survive the swap. Joyas 1380's Regional Mexican format was rebranded on 1470 as La Mera Mera 1470.
