Contents

1966–1975: KVOE-FM

Bluestem Broadcasting signed on KVOE-FM June 15, 1966, as the FM simulcast partner of the AM station. KVOE-FM duplicated KVOE two-thirds of the time. By the early 1970s, KVOE-FM adopted its own country music format while partially simulcasting the easy listening/middle of the road format of the AM station.

1975–1984: KLRF – Colorful 105

Around 1975, the FM station split programming altogether from KVOE. The FM station became KLRF, which stood for "Colorful." KLRF programmed a Drake-Chenault automated Top 40 format; the station is also listed as progressive, indicating it may have programmed album rock during other parts of the day. By 1982, the music had softened to more of an adult contemporary flavor.

1984–1993: KFFX – Fox 105

Following a licensee change to Emporia Broadcasting, 104.9 adotped a CHR format sometime in late 1984. KFFX is listed as an American Top 40 affiliate beginning in January 1986. Value Broadcasting bought the station in 1987.

1993–2001: KFFX – Fox 105

Around 1993, KFFX flipped to an album rock format with a surprisingly wide playlist. The station leaned gold during the day, and modern at night. Valu Broadcasting changed its name to Emporia's Radio Stations, Inc., in 1994.

2001–present: KFFX – Mix 104.9

Around 2001, KFFX flipped to a Hot AC format. KFFX began its Hot AC format completely satellite-fed through ABC. In 2013, KFFX relies on automation, with a local afternoon drive host. KFFX also airs the Kidd Kraddick syndicated morning show. KFFX is the current home for Emporia State sports.

Voice of the Hornets

Mix 104.9 KFFX is home to the Emporia State University Hornets athletic teams. The stations uses the slogan Voice of the Hornets during the sports seasons. Greg Rahe, KVOE Sports Director, broadcasts the games, alongside a co-worker. For football, it is Greg Rahe and Chuck Samples, and for basketball it is Greg Rahe and Steve Sauder, owner of Emporia Radio Stations, Inc.

Hornet Talk

During the football and basketball seasons, KVOE Sports Director Greg Rahe hosts a radio show on Mix 104.9, called Hornet Talk at Bruff's Sports Bar & Grill, a local sports bar & grill, in Emporia, every week from Noon to 1P. During that hour, Greg talks with the head coaches alongside some of the players that were outstanding during the previous games.
