Political career

Before his current position, Professor Maghembe’s was serving as Minister of Water and Irrigation, beginning in February 2012 and ending in November 2015.

Green Mile Controversy

In 2016, Maghembe faced international controversy after allowing a company he knew committed dozens of wildlife crimes back into Tanzania. The company - Green Mile Safari from the United Arab Emirates - had been kicked out of Tanzania after their own promotional video showed animal torture and repeated violations of Tanzania law. Maghembe's decision to let the company back in was widely assumed in news reports to be based on his acceptance of a bribe from Green Mile. One international observer and wildlife activist said, "I don’t doubt there’s a substantial amount of money for the ministers involved."

Education and Academia

In 1975, Maghembe graduated with a degree in Forestry from the University of Dar es Salaam. In 1981 he completed a PhD at the University of Dar es Salaam. In 1986 he was a Fulbright Scholar at Oregon State University. For fifteen years he was a Principal Scientist at the International Center for Research in Agroforestry (ICRAF).
