Juan Francisco Casas (born September 21, 1976 in La Carolina, Jaén, Andalusia) is a Spanish artist and poet. Casas recreates photographs he's taken as large scale oil paintings on canvas, as well as similarly scaled drawings using only blue ballpoint pens. The drawings and paintings are created in photo realistic style most of them as large as 10 feet. He is considered one of the more influential young painters in Spain.Casas lives and works in Paris and Madrid.

Juan Francisco Casas Ruiz graduated with a B.A. and a M.F.A. from the University of Granada. He subsequently completed his PhD at the university in 2004, while also holding a teaching position there. During his studies he won the National Award of the Ministry of Education and Science for the best graduate qualifications in Spain, presented by Culture Minister Pilar del Castillo.

  • 2002 INJUVE Art Show at the Circulo de Bellas Artes in Madrid. The exhibition later toured capitals of Latin America.
  • 2005 2nd Biennial of Prague, curated by Giancarlo Politi and organized by Flash Art magazine, the only Spanish representative among artists such as Damien Hirst, Maurizio Cattelan and Neo Rauch.
  • 2006 Catharsis - Rituals of Purification at the Museum Artium, Vitoria, along with Antoni Tàpies, Antonio Saura, Miquel Barceló, Jorge Oteiza and Antoni Muntadas.
  • The Sock Strategy at the International Biennial of Contemporary Art of Seville, curated by Okwui Enwezor.
  • 2008 The Joy of Sex, Las Vegas, Nevada (USA).

    Awards

    2002 Won the prestigious ABC Prize of Painting, the president of the jury being the artist Luis Gordillo. Culture Minister Pilar del Castillo presented the award.

    2007 Received the prestigious Fellowship of the Royal Academy of Spain, Rome, where he'd lived for one year. In Rome he collaborated with the artist Joseph Kosuth, and Kosuth's installation of his exhibition at La Casa Encendida in Madrid.

    2010 Awarded the Fellowship of the Colegio de España, Paris, where he'd lived for one year.

    Since 2002 Juan Francisco Casas is represented by Galería Fernando Pradilla, Madrid, and Galería El Museo, Bogotá, Colombia. His artwork is included in collections at the Museum Artium and the ABC Museum.

    Casas has also published books including poetry such as Thesummerhaikus and A and Other Poems at [Editions Alea Blanca].
