José Manuel Fors

History

José Manuel Fors is graduated from the Academy of Art San Alejandro in 1976; then he studied at the Institute of Museology in Havana from 1983 to 1986 and, at the same time, he work as museographer in the National of Museum of Beux-Arts.

In 1981, he starred one of the most renewal show in the panorama of Cuban art: Volume I. Consecutively, he almost abandons definitively his works into the material abstraction to realize installations. Thus, his first personal exhibition "Accumulations" (1983) would initiate some of his most recurrent topics and methodologies as an artist.

Fors is often considered as a photographer, nevertheless his photographic works are very isolated and, in some cases (such as in the early versions of "Fallen Leaves") it constitute as a mere documentary support. Furthermore, the photographs cuts that hi usually use in its installations -Wide shadow, Circular Stories, Fragments, Bundles of memory, among others- It becomes reins that articulate his artworks and, in unison, they reveal his interest in memory as topic in his work. This last issue with fragmentation and accumulations form the main wealth of his artistic work is fostered. In addition, their creations are inspired by the literature of some of the most important Cuban writers, mainly Eliseo Diego and Dulce Maria Loynaz, whose verses title some of the Fors artworks.

José Manuel Fors is an artist in constant exploration of the spatial limits of its installations. During the Twelfth Edition of the Havana Biennial, just occurred, he used a huge bales of recycled paper, it placed in a small location, which he changed, almost imperceptibly, with small and worn objects, old images, fragments of another works.
