Joseph Maguire (born 1952) retired from the United States Navy as a Vice Admiral in 2010. Prior to retiring from active duty, he was the Deputy Director for Strategic Operational Planning at National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC). NCTC's mission is to lead the U.S. Government in strategic operational planning and counter-terrorism intelligence in order to combat terrorist threats to the U.S. and its interests. Previously, Vice Admiral Maguire was Commander, Naval Special Warfare Command, Navy's component of the U.S. Special Operations Command and the Special Operations Component of the U.S. Navy. His first flag assignment was in United States Special Operations Command as the Director of Strategic Assessments and Resources.

He is currently the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Special Operations Warrior Foundation, a foundation which provides scholarship grants as well as educational counseling to the children of fallen Special Operations troops. The foundation also provides immediate financial assistance to severely wounded warriors and their families.

Maguire is highly revered as a leader in the U.S. Navy SEAL community.

History

Vice Adm. Maguire is from Brooklyn, New York. He graduated from Manhattan College in 1974, the Naval Postgraduate School in 1985 and was a 1994-95 National Security Fellow at Harvard University. During his naval career he lived in many parts of the United States and served around the world, including the Far East.

His first sea duty tour assignment was aboard USS Coronado (LPD 11) where he served as Deck Division Officer. Following Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training (BUD/S), where he graduated as Honor Man - Class 93, Rear Adm. Maguire served in Underwater Demolition Team Twenty One, SEAL Team Two, SEAL Delivery Vehicle Team Two, Naval Special Warfare Development Group, Naval Special Warfare Group Two, and later as Deputy Commander, Special Operations Command Pacific.

He had the honor of serving as Commanding Officer, SEAL Team TWO from 1992 to 1994, and Commanding Officer, Naval Special Warfare Center. Maguire was the Flag Lieutenant to Commander Amphibious Forces Seventh Fleet (CTF 76) and served in the Bureau of Naval Personnel, Washington, D.C., where he was Naval Special Warfare's Assignment Officer and Community Manager. From 2004 to 2007, Rear Admiral Maguire served as Commander, Naval Special Warfare Command.
