Murcia
José María started his football career in Real Murcia. He joined their youth academy in 1996 and was promoted to the first team in 2000.
On 13 January 2002, José María scored his first senior goal against SD Eibar. The goal was also the only goal of the match.
On Loan to Gimnàstic
José María joined Segunda División B club Gimnàstic de Tarragona on loan from Real Murcia in the 2002–03 season. He returned to Murcia at the end of the season.
Return to Murcia
José María returned to Real Murcia in the 2003–04 season. However, since Murcia were promoted to the La Liga, he only featured Real Murcia B's matches in the season. Unfortunately, Murcia was relegated at the end of the season.
The 2004–2005 season was José María's breakthrough season, which he featured more than twenty games and scored a goal for the first team in Segunda División. However, he only featured one game in the next season, and was loanned to Segunda División B club Burgos.
He returned to Real Murcia in the 2006–07 season. However, his return only meant featuring matches for Real Murcia B being League champion in Tercera División. He left the club at the end of the season.
Competing in Segunda División B
José María joined Segunda División B club Fuenlabrada in July 2007. However, he was transferred to fellow Segunda División B club Talavera in the winter transfer window. He left the club at the end of the season.
Binéfar
José María joined Tercera División club Binéfar in September 2008. After spending three months in the club, he joined American side Hollywood United F.C. in 2009.
Hong Kong
José María joined Hong Kong First Division League side Kitchee in January 2011 being League champion at the end of the season. José María returned to Kitchee in January 2012 winning League Cup, League and FA Cup for this season. In 2012-13 he was playing for Sunray Cave JC Sun Hei.
On 4 February 2014, he joins Royal Southern on a free transfer.
Jose Maria briefly joined Biu Chun Glory Sky in 2016 but was released during the January transfer window.
