José Guedes Brandão de Melo. (30 October 1846 – 23 September 1919) was a Portuguese colonial administrator and a military personnel. He was the son of Francisco Brandão de Melo Cogominho and mother of the first sister <Maria da Natividade Guedes de Portugal e Meneses

Biography

Guedes Brandão de Melo was born in Massarelos, a parish (now neighborhood) of Porto.

He was a young nobleman of the Royal House at the palace.

He taken position on 23 August 1867, he was promoted as second lieutenant on 4 January 1871, tennant on 20 January 1873, captain on 5 June 1878, major on 7 November 1878, tennant-colonel on 9 June 1894, colonel on 22 November 1900, a brigadier and finally general of the Artillery Division. He was commander of the Military Order of Santiago da Espada under the decree of 23 January 1901, commander of the Military Order of Christ, knight and commander of the Military Order of Avis and a Black Medal and a second class medal of the Military Order of Merit of Spain.

He was deputy of the nation, civil governor of the Guarda District, 92nd governor of Cape Verde between 1891 1893 and 1894 and 1897, inbetween Fernando de Magalhães e Menezes was colonial governor, and counsellor to King Charles I of Portugal

Marriage and children

On 10 May 1877, he married Maria dos Prazeres Mimoso da Costa Pereira de Alpoim de Carvalho (Celorico da Beira, Linhares, 3 February 1859-year of death unknown) Lady of the House of Mimosos, who was the daughter of Bernardo Mimoso da Costa Pereira de Alpoim, Sire of the Houses of Avelenda and Mimosos and her mother Maria do Carmo de Carvalho Rebelo Teixeira de Sousa Alcoforado (22 March 1833-year of death unknown) of the House of Poço in Lamego and great-granddaughter of the 1st Viscount of Peso da Régua and grand-niece of the 1st Count of Vila Pouca. She was also related to de António Mimoso Brandão de Melo.
