This chapter has been organizing biannual missions to the Dominican Republic for nearly 15 years. Each year this group sends medical personnel including physicians, dentists, nurses and pharmacists to Santiago, Dominican Republic. In addition to medical care and consultation, the group brings medications, medical supplies, toys, and clothing for the people of Santiago. Within Santiago, they work with the ILAC – Institute for Latin American Concern which is a program that began in 1973. The leaders of the program in the Dominican Republic are known as Cooperadores de Salud and assist with screening and working with all of the 160 campos or villages that the group works with. ILAC Center endorses training of leaders in the villages in order to ensure that they are meeting basic healthcare needs. These leaders then work as a liaison between the village the ILAC.
The ILAC Center near Santiago has facilities including a chapel, dormitories, a dining hall and offices as well as patient waiting rooms, consultation offices, surgical suites and pre and post operation areas. The Center also includes a pharmacy, storage, and dental suites. The Cooperadores de Salud also assist with helping to organize travel from the camps to the ILAC Center where they can receive care. This allows for the mission volunteers to see more patients during their time in the Dominican Republic, allowing them to see over 1000 patients each time they go.
