He belonged to the same Espoo Blues junior ice hockey program as current SKA Saint Petersburg goaltender Mikko Koskinen and the up-and-coming Erno Suomalainen; becoming more than just a benchwarmer in European ice hockey. Iliahti would go on to be drafted 39th overall by the Vancouver Giants in the 2011 CHL Import Draft. However, he chose to remain in Finland.
