He arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of seventeen when he first linked up with the Clare minor team, before later joining the under-21 side. He made his senior debut in the 2005 championship. Clancy went on to play a key part for Clare for almost a decade, and won one All-Ireland medal as a non-playing substitute and one Waterford Crystal Cup medal.

As a member of the Munster inter-provincial team at various times, Clancy won one Railway Cup medal as a non-playing substitute in 2007. At club level he is a two-time championship medallist with Clarecastle.
