John T. Madden (born c. 1963) is Director of the Spartan Marching Band, Associate Director of Bands and Associate Professor of Music at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan. He is the conductor of the MSU Symphony Band. As Director of MSU's Athletic Bands, Madden conducts the 300-member Spartan Marching Band and guides all aspects of the Spartan Brass. Madden also serves on the MSU Music Education faculty, teaching undergraduate and graduate conducting and has taught courses on marching band techniques.

Education

Madden is a 1985 graduate of the Michigan State University School of Music, where he received his Bachelor of Music Education Degree. During his undergraduate years he was also a member of the Spartan Marching Band, eventually serving as a Trumpet Section Leader and Vice President of the Band. Madden marched in the Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps, and was a solo lead soprano bugle player. He received his Master of Music Education and Conducting degrees from Wichita State University.

Career

Madden served as a Graduate Assistant to the Wichita State University Bands while completing his master's degree. He briefly held the post of Associate Director of Bands and Director of the Marching Band at Rutgers University before assuming his current duties as Director of the Spartan Marching Band, Associate Director of Bands and Associate Professor of Music at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan.

Professor Madden is active throughout the United States as a guest conductor and clinician, and has conducted MSU ensembles at state, regional, and national conventions and conferences. He is the Michigan Chair of the College Band Directors National Association, and is a member of the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association, the Music Educators National Conference, and the Big Ten Band Directors Association. He is an honorary member of Kappa Kappa Psi, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Golden Key International Honour Society, and Tau Beta Sigma, and is a brother and past National Vice President for Professional Relations of Kappa Kappa Psi, the national honorary band fraternity.
