History

The school opened in August 1971 as John Hope Middle School, a neighborhood middle school serving students in grades six thru eighth. In September 1996, The Chicago board of education was faced with overcrowding issues at area–high schools near Hope. Hope's student enrollment at the time was approximately 300. Due to overcrowding of nearby high schools, The school board decided revamped the neighborhood attendance boundaries; and to convert Hope into a high school. The school began accepting ninth grade students (freshmen) for the 1997–98 school year; phasing out it's middle school program. Due to an enrollment decline, The school re–implemented the middle school program with a seventh and eighth grade program in 2003; the program was later phased out in 2007.

Hope competes in the Chicago Public High School League (CPL) and is a member of the Illinois High School Association (IHSA).The school sport teams are nicknamed Eagles.
