John F. Kennedy High School is a comprehensive public high school located in the Thompson Field area of San Antonio, Texas. It is a part of the Edgewood Independent School District of Bexar County, Texas.

History

The school opened in 1963. Today the school is a Texas 4-A school with a population of approximately 1,400 students.

President Kennedy visited San Antonio on November 21, 1963 and promised to return and dedicate the new John F. Kennedy High School, which was the first high school named in his honor. He was assassinated in Dallas the following day.

Sports

The school's mascot is a rocket in honor of President Kennedy's support of the U.S. Space Program. The school's colors are green and white due to President Kennedy's Irish heritage, green and white are 2 of 3 of Ireland's colors.

School Newspaper

In 2014, the school began a new student-run newspaper, the Kennedy Profile. The current staff consists of roughly 20 students, with 7 section editors and 2 executive editors. The paper has acknowledged the presence of social media in the 21st century, and can thus be found on multiple online social networks.

The Mighty Rocket Band

The Band program has been recognized as outstanding in the San Antonio area. The most recent trophies held by the Rocket Band are a 1st-place finish overall 4-A band in the Fredericksburgh Marching Competition also receiving first place for marching (October 2009), 2nd-place finish in the Northside Competition (September 2009), 1st Division UIL Concert/Sight Reading Contest (April 2007) (April 2010), 1st division UIL marching contest (November 2007)(November 2009), Region marching contest and a 3rd-place trophy at Drums Along the Medina Marching Competition. (October 2006) The Mighty Rocket Band also participates in Fiesta Activities such as Battle of the Bands, The Battle of Flowers Parade, and Fiesta Flambeu Parade.

  • John Garza (Class of 1973), Republican member of the Texas House of Representatives from District 117 (2011 to 2013)
  • Heriberto Hernandez, one of seven Coast Guardsmen killed in action in Vietnam and recipient of the Bronze Star Medal for valor posthumously.
