John E. Kerrigan (October 1, 1908 – May 2, 1987)> was the acting Mayor of Boston in 1945 when Maurice J. Tobin was elected governor. Kerrigan was later given full mayoral powers by the Legislature but was defeated in the mayoral race later that year by James Michael Curley.

Biography

He was born on October 1, 1908. Kerrigan began serving on the Boston City Council in 1933. Kerrigan retired from the Council in 1973—having served 15 terms. Kerrigan also served in the State Senate. He died on May 2, 1987 of cardiac arrest at Boston City Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. He had never married.
