John De Goey is a Canadian author and financial advisor. He is a portfolio manager for Industrial Alliance Securities Inc. (IAS). De Goey is the author of the book The Professional Financial Advisor. He has had regular appearances as a financial commentator on networks such as BNN's Market Call, he is a contributing editor for MoneySaver Magazine and has also contributed to publications including The Globe and Mail and The National Post.

Career

De Goey graduated from the University of Guelph with an undergraduate degree in political studies in 1987. He received his Master of Arts in Public Administration from Carleton University in 1991.

In 1993, De Goey started his practice in the investment industry when he joined The Equion Group, an Ontario-based company that later merged with another company to become Assante Capital Management in 1999 in Toronto.

While at Assante, De Goey became interested in portfolio optimization, financial planning and modern portfolio theory. In 2001, De Goey adopted a business model that rejected the use of embedded compensation to one featuring advice that was not dependent upon the use of such products. That same year, he began working on his first book focused on the investment industry. His book, The Professional Financial Advisor: Ethics, Unbundling and Other Things to Ask Your Financial Advisor About, was first released in 2003. The book was later updated and re-released in 2006 as The Professional Financial Advisor II: How the Financial Services Industry Hides the Ugly Truth and again in 2012 as The Professional Financial Advisor III: Putting Transparency and Integrity First.

In 2005, De Goey began working with Burgeonvest Bick Securities Limited (BBSL), where he served as vice president and is registered as a portfolio manager. In 2011, he became one of only 65 Canadians to be recognized as a Fellow of The Financial Planning Standards Council (FPSC). De Goey has been recognized by Wealth Professional Magazine as one of the Top 50 Advisors in Canada in 2014 and 2015 In 2015, De Goey continued his role at Industrial Alliance Securities Inc. (IAS), a Quebec City-based subsidiary of Industrial Alliance Insurance and Financial Services Inc. when BBSL was acquired by the company. In 2016, De Goey released his fourth book, The Professional Financial Advisor IV.
