Superdrag
Davis' primary roles in the band were that of songwriter, singer and lead guitarist. By the time Superdrag was beginning work on their fourth full-length record, Davis was an alcoholic. One night as Davis was driving, he claims he felt the presence of God. "At first, I started to feel really uncomfortable," he has told The 700 Club. "I just started to feel funny, and I didn't really know why. The next thing I knew, for lack of a better term, I just went into a cold sweat. All of a sudden, I just knew that God was dealing with me. I would compare it to a car going from zero to 60. It was like going from zero conviction, to maximum conviction, in a heartbeat. I knew that the void in my heart, my life, would never be filled with a liquor bottle, or anything else, but Him. I said, 'Lord, I'm tired of running. I'm tired. Give me peace.' It was like a cool breeze, a cool wave." Davis gave up alcohol at that moment, and turned his life to Christianity. This inspired the metaphoric title of Superdrag's fourth album, Last Call for Vitriol. In 2003 the band split up.
Solo work
On March 8, 2005, Davis released his first solo album, playing all instruments on the record, with the exception of some bowed strings and percussion. The self-titled record, John Davis, is a combination of his signature pop melodies and a devout faith in God. In March 2006, John put alternate versions of the songs from his album on his website. Davis released his second solo album, Arigato!, on October 2, 2007.
My Red Hot Nightmare
He then joined Christian rock band My Red Hot Nightmare, where he was a guitarist, backing vocalist, and second-string drummer.
Return to Superdrag
In 2007 the band reunited to tour once again before the members decided to stay reunited with Davis as their lead member.
Epic Ditch
In 2011, John formed punk band Epic Ditch with Nick Raskulinecz, Stewart Pack, and Nick Slack. Their 7" debut was released by Velocity of Sound.
The Lees of Memory
In 2013 Superdrag members John Davis and Brandon Fisher along with Epic Ditch drummer Nick Slack released their first single "We Are Siamese" on Velocity of Sound. Their full-length debut album, Sisyphus Says was released in 2014 by SideOneDummy Records.
