Biography

John Browne was born in Blackrock just outside Cork in 1977. He was educated locally and later studied at University College Cork where he qualified with a degree in dentistry. While at the UCC, Browne developed his hurling skills by joining the college’s hurling team. He subsequently won a Fitzgibbon Cup title with the college. Browne played his club hurling with Blackrock, a successful hurling club in Cork. With Blackrock he won Cork SHC titles in 1999, 2001 and 2002.

Browne's skill was quickly spotted by the Cork inter-county selectors. He won an All-Ireland medal with the under-21 side in 1997 before joining the senior panel in 1998. That year he won a National Hurling League medal. In 1999, Browne won his first Munster title before later converting this into his first All-Ireland medal following a victory over Kilkenny. In 2000, Browne captured a second Munster title, however, Cork were beaten by Offaly in the All-Ireland semi-final. Browne was subsequently joined on the inter-county team by his brother Alan Browne. In 2004, Browne captured a second All-Ireland medal when he came on as a sub in the All-Ireland final against Kilkenny.
