In 2002, Broughton was one of five astronomers who was awarded a "Gene Shoemaker NEO Grant" by the Planetary Society to support his work on near-Earth asteroids. The money was used to purchase a CCD camera.

The Flora asteroid 24105 Broughton was named in his honour.

Discoveries and research

On 11 April 2004, Broughton discovered the Apollo asteroid (186844) 2004 GA1, a near-Earth object and potentially hazardous asteroid. Broughton's finding is considered the first amateur discovery of a large, potentially hazardous NEO. In 2005 and 2006, he has also discovered two comets, now designated P/2005 T5 (Broughton) and C/2006 OF2 (Broughton).

He has produced two software applications for the drift-scan timing of asteroid occultation. These are called scantracker and scanalyser and are available online for free.
