Life

Already at the age of 10 he was with his father at the Battle of Zwartkopjes and at age 13 at the Battle of Boomplaats. He was a magistrate in Potchefstroom and a Volksraadlid (member of the people's assembly) for that area. He was much involved in church affairs and was largely responsible for the adoption of policies stating that Protestant ministers be paid from state funds.

Second Boer War

With the outbreak of the war he was in charge of the Johannesburg commando and German Corps. He invaded Natal to blow up the railway lines but did not follow instructions exactly and became involved in the Battle of Elandslaagte on October 21, 1899. He lost the battle and was wounded. He died a few days later from his wounds.
