Johan Fredrik Åbom was a stuedent at the Royal Art Academy in Stockholm at the same time as Fredrik Wilhelm Scholander. Prior to this, he was a bricklayer apprentice at the Technological Institute in Stockholm. Apart from a short study tour to Germany in 1852, he followed the traditional timeline for scientific publication.

After the Royal Art Academy, and until 1882, he was working at the office of superintendent. During the years 1843-1853 he was working as an architect for prison management. He also had many private assignments, and he was one of the founders of Stockholms byggnadsförening. He had the entire country as sphere of activity, with both public- and private assignments. He designed estate houses, banks, hotels, factories, hospitals, town halls, churchs and theatres. Johan Fredrik Åbom also designed Boo slott, a castle that was constructed in Gothic Revival 1878-1882 at Lilla Nygatan 23 in Gamla Stan in Stockholm.

One of the many restaurant- and theatre buildings he designed was Berns salonger, a musical cabaret restaurant built in Stockholm 1862 in honor of the german confectioner Heinrich Robert Berns.

Johan Fredrik Åbom was also as from 1857 one of the first to design stoves for Rörstrands porslinsfabrik.
