Early life and modelling

Joey started her career at the age of five when she was taken on by child modelling agency Elisabeth Smith. She worked internationally for various stores, magazines and TV advertising with brands such as Keds shoes, C&A, and Sanyo. For toy company Mattel she was the 'face of Barbie' during a London promotion, appearing and singing at Hamleys toy store. She had some success as an actress, working with Floella Benjamin and appearing on The Bill. She was asked to audition for Walt Disney Studios. Whilst in America she lived in Martha's Vineyard working for UK clothing company Jack Wills for two years promoting brand awareness.

As a teenager she was offered places at Sylvia Young, Redroofs Theatre School, and The Arts Educational School. She studied at the Arts Educational School in Tring, Hertfordshire from age 11 to 18 on a scholarship basis. As a result of this training she has performed in several professional productions.

She has worked frequently with UK makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury.

Joey hosted her own weekly radio show based in Edinburgh, covering the Midlothian area, with an audience of both Forces and civilians.

Music career

Joey began her musical career performing and songwriting after being spotted by a manager who wanted her to front a ‘Blondie style’ band project. She gained experience performing in gigs with a pop band and occasionally a full orchestra. She wrote some songs with a local producer, put them on Myspace, and was spotted by Steve Dorff, with whom she collaborated as a songwriter and artist.

Joey also collaborated with a number of top writers from Warner/Chappell Music, The Shake Shifters, and Ki Fitzgerald.

She was first signed with Gray Rosen Music Corporation, based in Los Angeles, after being spotted on Myspace. She auditioned for the Corporation on Skype and was then invited to go to LA and work with Justin Gray in projects for Polydor, Mercury, and Walt Disney.

Joey and Justin completed an album, but shortly afterwards the partnership between Rosen and Gray was dissolved. Manager Steven Rosen then took on the project solely until teaming up with Majorcan-based management company WOF, who took on the leadership of the project.

Her songs have since been played on international radio and a number of US TV shows.

During her time in LA, Joey worked with several well known songwriters and producers, including Chris Young, Novel Jannusi, Jasmine Ash, and Andreas Carlsson.

Since returning to the UK she has continued to concentrate on her career as a singer/songwriter.

Family Life

Joey (Joanna) is the daughter of Maj General McDowall and his wife Valerie and is married to Andy Brown, Lead Singer of the music band Lawson.
