Joel Perez is an American actor known for his work in the musical Fun Home.

Early life and education

Perez was born in Boston, and grew up in Lawrence, Massachusetts. His father is a minister. Perez is a 2004 graduate of Central Catholic High School in Lawrence. He went to Tufts University for pre-med, but later changed his major to theatre. Perez studied for a semester at the British American Drama Academy in London, and moved to New York in 2009. Helming also studied at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre.
Career

Perez began his career in 2010 with a role in the national tour of Lin-Manuel Miranda's Tony Award-winning musical In the Heights. While touring he appeared in a couple of films, including BoyBand. He eventually left the tour and appeared in a couple of original musicals at smaller theaters, several short films, and some television shows. In 2013, Perez began playing Mark, Pete, Roy, and Bobby Jeremy, one of only two parts for men, in the off-Broadway musical Fun Home. Perez went with the show when it opened on Broadway at the Circle in the Square Theatre in April 2015, where it won five Tony Awards.
