Playing career

Born in Keswick, Ontario, Hanley played Junior A with the Newmarket Hurricanes before spending four seasons with the UMass Minutemen ice hockey of the NCAA. Following his college career, he landed his first professional contract with the American Hockey League's Portland Pirates. He spent two seasons (2013–2015) in Portland including a short demotion to the ECHL's Gwinnett Gladiators.

In the summer of 2015, Hanley signed a two-way contract with the Montreal Canadiens organization and reported to the team's AHL affiliate: the St. John's IceCaps. Following a string of injuries to Canadiens' defencemen, Hanley was recalled and played his first NHL game on March 20, 2016. He contributed with his first two assists two days later.
