High school career

Mixon attended Freedom High School, where he played football and basketball. He was a three-year starter at running back for the Freedom Falcons football team. He rushed for 1,134 yards and 13 touchdowns as a sophomore on 171 carries. In his junior year he rushed for 1,443 yards and 21 touchdowns on 201 carries. In his final year, he rushed for 1,704 yards and 23 touchdowns on 226 carries.

Mixon played in 16 basketball games for the Falcons, scoring a total of 195 points. He maintained a 12.2 PPG average and a free throw percentage of 57% and made 79 field goals. His team went 22-2 overall and 10-0 in league play that season.

Mixon was ranked as a five-star recruit and the No. 1 running back in the nation by Rivals.com. In January 2014, he committed to the University of Oklahoma to play college football. He had 47 offers, including those from Alabama, Cal, Florida State and UCLA.

Mixon was suspended and removed from the team for the 2014 season after a misdemeanor assault charge in October 2014. He earned playing time his redshirt freshman year, playing in all 12 games with three starts. In his first career game, Mixon had a 76-yard touchdown reception, the longest catch ever by a Sooner freshman running back. He also ran for 27 yards on five carries for an average of 5.4 yards per carry against Akron. During the 2015 regular season, he ran for 749 yards on 110 carries, averaging 6.8 yards. He rushed for seven touchdowns and set his career long carry at 66 yards. He also recorded 25 receptions for 345 yards, averaging 13.8 yards per reception, and four touchdowns.

2014 misdemeanor assault charge

Mixon entered an Alford plea to a misdemeanor assault charge in October 2014 for punching a woman named Amelia Molitor in the head, causing broken bones in her face which required hospitalization and surgery. The incident happened on July 25, 2014 at Pickleman's Gourmet Cafe in Norman, on Campus Corner.

According to Molitor, Mixon and some of his teammates were harassing Molitor and her friend because the friend is gay. Mixon then followed Molitor and her friend into the shop. The surveillance video of the incident showed Mixon and Molitor having a verbal argument, which was followed by Molitor pushing Mixon, him lunging at her, her slapping him, and him punching her. The punch caused her face to slam into a table. Mixon later told police that Molitor's friend had directed a racial slur at him and that he responded with an anti-gay slur at the friend.

Mixon received a one-year deferred sentence and was required to perform 100 hours of community service and undergo counseling. Molitor filed suit in federal court against Mixon on July 22, 2016. She accused Mixon of negligence, willful and wanton misconduct, and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

2016 parking citation incident

Oklahoma suspended Mixon for one game in 2016 after an incident involving him and a parking attendant. After receiving a parking citation, Mixon confronted the attendant, tore the citation in half, and threw the pieces, which hit her in the face. According to the incident report, he then "inched at the officer" with his vehicle "to intimidate the officer".
