Early life
Umpleby was raised in Highland, Indiana and attended Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. He graduated with a Bachelor's degree in 1980.
Career
Umpleby joined the Solar Turbines unit of International Harvester after his college graduation in 1980. Caterpillar purchased Solar Turbines, Inc. shortly thereafter.
In January 2017, Umpleby announced that Caterpillar would move its corporate headquarters to Chicago from Peoria, citing the greater accessibility and strategic location of Chicago particularly for the company's large international business. In a Q&A Umpleby said the new headquarters would start with around 100 staff and would eventually house about 300 employees. He also said the move was part of the "painful process" of downsizing and restructuring to respond to a 40% sales drop and global market shifts since 2012.
