Playing career

Hoff attended Xavier University, where he played college baseball for the Xavier Musketeers baseball team. Hoff played professional baseball in the Cincinnati Reds organization in minor league baseball from 1967 through 1972. The Reds moved Dave Concepción from second base to shortstop because Hoff was the superior fielder.

Managing career

Hoff spent ten years managing various Cincinnati farm teams: the Seattle Rainiers (1973), Billings Mustangs (1974–1976 and 1978–1981), Tampa Tarpons (1977), and Nashville Sounds (1988). After 22 games with Nashville, Hoff was replaced and took up a position in the Reds front office. In 1978, he managed the Mustangs to win the Pioneer League Championship. He became the Toronto Blue Jays minor league pitching instructor in 1997. In 2002, he became the minor league field coordinator for the Tampa Bay Rays.
