AFL career

Short was drafted by Richmond with the 11th overall selection in the 2015 rookie draft . He spent 2015 on Richmond's rookie list and did not play a game in the club's AFL side.

In March 2016 he was upgraded to the club's senior list, replacing the injured Reece Conca. He made his debut in Round 2 of that season and kicked a goal with his first kick. Short finished the game with an equal team-high three goals. He played another 15 games in his debut season, playing predominantly in the backline and becoming a key kick-out taker for the side.

Short was upgraded to Richmond's senior list in October 2016, and signed a new two year contract keeping him at the club until at least the end of the 2018 season.
