Early life, education, and career
Jay Singh studied a year at Suffolk University and then transferred to University of Massachusetts Amherst and graduated with Bachelor of Business Administration in marketing from Isenberg School of Management.
Singh's entrepreneurial career started in a University of Massachusetts Amherst dorm room with the founding of Viral Media Solutions, an internet marketing company whose clientele included Coca-Cola, Procter & Gamble, and Sears. Wanting to learn from a successful company, he spent time as the Demand Development Manager for Experience.com, an education technology company. In June 2012, Singh stated his new business ViralGains was made to "supply the massive demand for Viral video seeding and distribution." In July 2012, the company was named as one of Boston's Hottest Showcasing Startups by Tech Cocktail. In an interview with the company, Singh stated the company's marketing platform was for brands and advertising agencies.
In 2013, ViralGains was named as a finalist of MassChallenge, and the company went on to win the program's Diamond Prize of $100,000. The company reached $1 million of booked sales in its first year and Singh stated the company was receiving "national reach" from its acceptance to the 500 Startups program. A $2.8 million seed round for ViralGains was announced with Singh saying "advertisers are really excited about viral video" and describing a new capability to "scale up our advertising technology platform." There were 45 total investors in the seed round including 500 Startups, Nas, Semyon Dukach. Singh finished his role at ViralGains in late 2014.
