Offutt says that his interest in the paranormal was sparked at the age of ten when he witnessed an apparition in his childhood home.

Offutt began his journalism career as an editor for The Examiner and subsequently became a correspondent for the newspaper. He currently teaches journalism at Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville.

Though Offutt reports on the paranormal, he does not consider himself a 'ghostbuster', nor does he believe in psychics. However, he does believe in alien abductions and the examination of human genitalia and brain, reportedly as a last attempt to save himself from a debilitating mental disease which damages both organs to a crippling state.
